Having their cake and eating it too: Favre and Prey sign for college

College Signings are usually a big deal.
But Wednesday morning at John Paul II, there may have been more buzz about the cake celebrating the signings of Kristen Favre (East Tennessee State) and Katie Prey (Charleston).
"It's a pretty nice cake," Favre said. "It's half and half with both schools on there."
Cake excitement aside, the two volleyball players were the main event.
"We want to thank Katie and Kristen for all their hard work and contributions to John Paul II," said Rich Gaffney, Cardinals athletic director. "And not just on the volleyball court; their actions and interactions with other students epitomize what this school is all about."
First-year volleyball head coach Nicki Gonzalez agreed.
"These girls were of great support to the program and for me this year," she said before slyly adding, "I wish I would have had them since they were freshmen ... though I'm not sure if that is something they would wish for."
The continuingly kind words weren't surprising to either player as it is an atmosphere they have enjoyed for many years.
"Everyone here is so close," Favre said. "We're like a family here at John Paul."
Favre was first contacted by ETSU through her club coach Mike Minnis. Though not familiar with the Buccaneers, she quickly acclimated herself to the program.
"I looked them up and liked a lot of what I saw," Favre said. "And then when I made my visit, I just loved the academics, the campus, the players, the coaches, everything about it."
Favre, who plans to major in exercise science, also considered UNT, San Angelo State and Indiana before going with ETBU. Favre mentioned the small campus feel as one of her determining factors, a point noted by Prey as well in choosing her West Virginia-based school.
"It's a small private school and I liked that feel," she said. "It's a lot like John Paul."
As was the case with Favre, Prey wasn't very knowledgeable about Charleston when they first approached her following nationals over the summer.
"Not really, but I quickly looked up the school," said Prey, who also considered Midwestern State. "And then when I walked on to the campus (during her visit in October), it just felt right."
Prey made her decision official Wednesday with many friendly faces watching on.
"Seeing all these people here just reminds me of how much I've gotten from this school and how grateful I am for that," she said. "It also makes the moment a little bittersweet because I have to say goodbye to all of that."
Saying goodbye to Favre will be particularly difficult.
"Yeah," Prey said before leaning over to hug her teammate, "because we're like sisters."
Favre echoed those statements.
"Katie and I have played together here since we were freshmen and been on two club teams together," she said, "so this has been a big goal for us and to be able to share this moment with her really means a lot."
