Football: Brown leads Farmers to first win

Published: Saturday, September 15, 2012 1:30 AM CDT
LEWISVILLE - During the first two weeks of the season, it appeared the Lewisville football team's gas tank had run dry in the second half.

But Friday, the second half is when the Farmers went into overdrive.

Lewisville (1-2) grabbed their first win of the season by beating Irving, 24-10. The victory also gives coach Gregg Miller his first win as Lewisville coach. Irving, which also played in tight games during its first two weeks, drops to 0-3.

"This was huge," Miller said. "The first two games had been pretty close. They were getting tired of letting games slip through their fingers."

In week one, the Farmers were shut out in the second half and lost to Plano Senior, 14-7. Last week, Lewisville was held to six points after halftime as it fell to Ennis, 30-26.

Miller said his team saw the possibility of another close loss and made sure it didn't happen.

"We've been in three tight games now," he said. "And at halftime, we said, 'Here we go again.'"

But halftime is when Lewisville made some adjustments, and they paid off.

The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 10 when Deandre Brown took over. With 6:39 left in the game, Brown capped a 10-play drive by taking a snap down the left sideline 44 yards for a touchdown, giving Lewisville a 17-10 lead.

Then with Irving threatening late in the game, Lewisville defensive back Jaden Wright recovered an Irving fumble at the Tigers 44-yard line. On the ensuing play, Brown again ran for a 44-yard touchdown, this time down the right sideline.

Brown rushed 13 times for 99 yards in the second half after not carrying the ball in the first half.

"We turned it on a little in the second half," Miller said. "Some things happened for us up front. Our offensive line got some better holds. Offensively we made some adjustments, and Deandre took advantage."

The first half for Lewisville featured an offense led mostly by running back Ahkeel Guy. He rushed 13 times for 96 yards before halftime, and his 26-yard touchdown run with 3:04 left in the second quarter gave Lewisville a 10-7 lead. Tluany Hmung's 28-yard field goal put the Farmers on the board earlier in the quarter.

Irving's first-half offense was led by quarterback Cody Luttrell, who threw for 75 yards in the first half, and running back Jacobi Perry, who was 13-for-57 in the first half. His short run late in the first quarter put Irving up, 7-0.

But throughout the game, Irving's offense was never too much for Lewisville to handle. Luttrell's longest completion was for 14 yards, and only four of his 27 completions were for 10 yards or more.

Irving only had two runs for 10 yards or more in the game.

"Our defense was pretty much bend but don't break," Miller said. "Irving did a great job, and their offense is difficult to cover. But we did a good job of making adjustments, and I'm proud of the way we did that. The last two weeks, we fell apart trying to do that."

For the game, Irving was held to 269 yards, the lowest total the Farmers have given up so far.

Several players had big defensive plays for Lewisville, especially late as the Farmers were clinging to a lead.

With the Farmers leading by a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, linebacker Ryan Elias had a key tackle for a loss of 4 yards. Later in the same drive, defensive back Tyus Williams knocked down a pass attempt to force Irving to punt.

Lewisville looks get hot next week when it plays Arlington (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. from Maverick Stadium at UT-Arlington.
