11-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Skeeters, Stallions open district play with victories

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 7:24 PM CST
The district championship is not won in one day, but it never hurts to get off on the right foot.

That was exactly what Mesquite and North Mesquite did on Tuesday, as each picked up victories on the opening day of the District 11-5A season.

Mesquite (11-7) sent a decisive message with a 63-32 thumping of Longview.

The Skeeters jumped out to an 18-5 lead after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 35-14 by halftime.

Mesquite took no chances in the second half as it pulled away further for the easy win. Ten different players scored for the Skeeters, led by Viershanie Latham with 15 points and Briana Caro with 13.

The Skeeters have another big game on Friday when they play on the road at Horn.

North Mesquite has had a rough go of it for much of the season, but that was not the case on Tuesday as it rolled to a 61-36 victory over Rockwall-Heath.

The Stallions, who are 4-10 overall on the year, took control from the start with a 20-6 run to start the game.

North Mesquite held the Hawks to only five points in the second quarter, and while the second half was more evenly-played, the Stallions stayed a safe distance in front.

Taylor Carroway had a big game for North Mesquite with 25 points, while Racheal Malone was also in double figures with 15.

The Stallions will look for a 2-0 start on Friday when it travels to face Tyler Lee.

Horn has had the most impressive start among the MISD 5A teams, but it was the lone team to come out on the short end on Tuesday with a 47-44 loss to Rockwall.

The Jaguars (11-4) led by three early on but scored only two points in the second quarter as the Yellow Jackets took the lead.

Horn surged back to tie the game at 32-32 through three quarters, but Rockwall had too much down the stretch.

Kristina Smith had 19 points to pace the Jaguars, while Victoria Youman and Lauren Bradshaw each added six.

The Jaguars will try to avoid a 0-2 start on Friday when they host Mesquite.
