Hockey: Denton County picks up first win

Published: Saturday, October 20, 2012 1:52 AM CDT
Denton County's hockey team, which is comprised of players from Denton, Lewisville and The Colony, picked up its first win of the season in the Varsity East division Oct. 4 as the Spartans (1-2) had an offensive outburst against McKinney (2-1) in a 7-4 victory.

The squads were all square, 2-2, after two periods before Denton County posted four consecutive goals to open the third.

Cameron Mixson was key in closing the game as he recorded a hat trick in the third period alone.

Other goal-scorers for the Spartans were Devin Howard, Tony Mason, Sangwoo Seo and Destry Kittman.

Link Berch had a busy night in net for Denton County, making 49 saves on 53 shots to pick up the win.

The team was unable to follow up on its win, however, coming up short Thursday against Southlake Carroll, 5-1.

The Dragons (3-0) kept the pressure on the Spartans throughout, outshooting Denton County, 38-20.

Chris McNamara and Kenny Gill scored two goals apiece for the Dragons, while Chris Barrett also scored. Mixson had the lone goal for Denton County.

Denton County's Stephen Degreiner and Carroll's A.J. Smith made 33 and 19 saves, respectively.

Marcus (2-1), meanwhile, is tied for third in the Varsity West Division after splitting its last two games.

On Oct. 4, the Marauders topped Grapevine-Colleyville, 3-2, after Joseph Wilt found Cross Fresquez at the 11:13 mark of the third period for the game-winning goal. Connor Caldwell had gotten Marcus out to a 2-0 advantage with a goal in both the first and second period. Wes Ward, Peter Hatton and Jason Stewart chipped in assists for the Marauders, while Kamen Kessler stopped 34-of-36 shots in goal to earn the win.

Marcus was unable to secure a third consecutive win last Thursday, though, suffering a 6-2 loss to Richardson-Rockwall. The Marauders led in the second period, 2-1, before Richardson-Rockwall closed with five unanswered goals.

Fresquez and Caldwell scored for Marcus, while Zach Barham and Connor Wiseman posted two goals apiece for Richardson-Rockwall.

The Marauders continued Thursday against Arlington (a 7-3 loss) before taking on Mansfield at 7 p.m. next Thursday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Euless.

Next up for the Spartans was Plano West Thursday (an 11-2 loss) followed by a tilt with Allen at 7 p.m. next Thursday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in McKinney.
