Sunnyvale girls open district play in strong fashion
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
As the two-time defending district champions, Sunnyvale has lofty expectations.
The Raiders have played well during the non-district portion of the schedule, but they understand that means nothing as far as 6-2A play is concerned.
For Sunnyvale, the start of the district season is the beginning of their main quest to return to the playoffs and defend its title and they got off to a strong start toward achieiving those goals on Tuesday with a 47-28 victory over Caddo Mills.
The Raiders, who are 10-3 overall, landed a big punch early on against Caddo Mills by opening the game with a 19-2 run.
Sunnyvale kept up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, allowing only four points as the lead swelled to 22 points.
The Raiders called off the dogs in the second half, and while they were actually outscored 22-19, they were never seriously threatened.
Caila Sims scored 17 points to lead Sunnyvale, while Grace Goodhart and Olivia Williams added nine and eight points, respectively.
Sunnyvale will return to action on Friday when it hots Pilot Point and then go on the road to play Farmersville on Tuesday.

Sunnyvale played better in the second half, but could never mount a serious charge.
Thomas Wendt was the lone Raider in double figures with 15 points, while Stephen Kirven chipped in with nine.
