Allen hospital patients receive teddy bears from Allen Americans game

Santa and Allen Americans hockey players visited with patients Dec. 19 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen, bringing them teddy bears and plenty of holiday cheer.

"Being sick at the holidays is tough, especially for our pediatric patients," said hospital community relations specialist Sarah Mitchell. "We appreciate the Allen Americans coming to visit our patients and wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season."

Christmas tree, post-Christmas trash collection

The city of Allen will pick up Christmas trees for recycling during the two weeks following Christmas; trees must be free of all decorations, lights, ornaments, tinsel and tree stands and can be set out for pickup on the scheduled collection day. After the two weeks, trees must be bundled and tied as normal tree and brush trimmings.

Weekly 6 a.m. social run

Gather at Luke's Locker at 6 a.m. every Thursday morning for a 45-minute social run. Out and back run, for all levels, bagels and coffee after at the store. Visit http://www.watterscreek.com/ for information.




Winter reading clubs under way

Children and teens can stop by the library and pick up their reading logs now for the Allen Public Library's winter reading clubs.

Teens ages 12-18 who read three books before Jan. 13 will earn a free book and be entered into a prize drawing for $25 gift cards to Cinemark, GameStop or Starbucks.

Kids ages 0-11, come "Soar with Books!" Younger readers who read 10 picture books or easy readers - and older readers who read three or more chapter books or non-fiction books - will get a free book when they return their reading logs by Jan. 13.

The Allen Public Library is at 300 N. Allen Drive.

Kaleidoscope of Dreams light show

Every night from 5-9 p.m. through Jan. 4, come see one of the largest holiday light shows in North Texas, with 250,000 sparking LED lights at the Village at Fairview, 329 Town Place, at the Macy's fountain entrance.




Get 'Cool Like Steve McQueen' at APL

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, the Allen Public Library hosts the first in this month's film series, "Cool Like Steve McQueen." Tuesday's feature is "The Cincinnati Kid," starring McQueen, Ann Margret, Karl Malden and Edward G. Robinson. In the 1965 movie, an up-and-coming poker player tries to prove himself in a high-stakes match against a long-time master of the game.
