Former Rowlett soccer standout making an impact at UCF

Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 1:54 AM CST
Marissa Diggs made a name for herself in local soccer circles as a stingy defender for a number of club teams and Rowlett High School.

That reputation remains, only it has spread far beyond North Texas.

Diggs, a junior at the University of Central Florida, was recently named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-America second team.

Diggs was also tabbed as the Conference-USA Defensive Player of the Year after helping UCF win the conference title for the first time in school history.

Diggs led a Central Florida defense that posted a school and conference record 15 shutouts and was second in the nation in goals against average (0.524/gm).

At the C-USA Tournament, she was named defensive most valuable player, as UCF posted three straight shutouts to win the event.

"Marissa is a tremendous 1vs.1 defender," UCF head coach Amanda Cromwell said. "She's so hard to beat because she's fast but she's also very physical. Not only does she win the ball, but she wins the ball and possesses it so she can start our attack for us."

The accolades are nothing new to Diggs. As a sophomore, she was named to the All-Central Region first team and to the C-USA first team and in 2010, she was tabbed a member of the conference all-freshman team.

While a member of the Eagles, Diggs was a co-captain and four year starter that helped lead Rowlett to four consecutive playoff appearances.
