10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wranglers enter holiday break in a three-way tie for first place

West Mesquite knows it has competition in its quest for an eighth consecutive district championship with Highland Park and Carrollton Newman Smith.
But until the Wranglers face those teams head-to-head, all they can do is take care of their other 10-4A business.
West Mesquite did that once again on Friday as it rolled to a 57-26 victory over North Forney.
West Mesquite got off to a slow start by its standards by only scoring eight points in the opening quarter.
They cranked things up from there, using a 13-2 run in the second period to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.
The Wranglers kept the pressure on in the third quarter, as an 18-4 spurt blew the game open and they were able to coast from there.
Claudia Price and Alexus Bertrand outscored North Forney by themselves, tallying 20 and 19 points, respectively.
Poteet had its first district win, as well as a major upset, in its sights but was unable to hold on in a 46-37 loss to Highland Park on Friday.
The Pirates led 20-19 at halftime, but the Scots came back to take a five-point lead through three quarters and pulled away from there.
Kelsey Stewart scored 15 points and Shyari Cheathem added 11 to pace the Poteet offense.
The teams will head into a break for the Christmas holiday with some separation in the standings.
The threesome at the top hold a two-game lead over both Forney and Carrollton Creekview. Poteet is one of three winless teams that will be looking to make a move when 10-4A play resumes next Thursday.
