Skeeters, Jaguars dominate 12-5A all-district football team

Published: Thursday, December 20, 2012 4:31 PM CST
For the first time since the Mesquite ISD 5A teams were aligned with the East Texas schools in 2004, the balance of power shifted back closer to home this past season.

Mesquite captured its first district championship since 2001 as its 6-0 run to the 12-5A crown was part of a perfect regular season.

Horn's knocked off nemesis Longview for the first time in school history and its lone blemish was a loss to the Skeeters as it took the 12-5A runner-up spot.

That success was reflected on the all-district team, as the Skeeters claimed three superlative awards and placed 20 players on the first and second teams.

The Jaguars were not far behind, picking up a pair of superlative awards and earning 17 spots on the first two teams.

Mesquite quarterback Alex Cooper was named 12-5A most valuable player after posting one of the more remarkable seasons in MISD history. The senior completed 72.9 percent of his passes (237-of-325) for 3,243 yards and 30 touchdowns compared with only two interceptions.

Cooper prefers to stay in the pocket, but he chose wise times to run, finishing with 433 yards and 10 scores on the ground.

Another MISD signal called, Horn's Desti White, was tabbed as the district's offensive most valuable player. The junior accounted for more than 3,000 combined yards to go along with 36 touchdowns.

The defensive most valuable player award was shared between Mesquite's Javon Jones and Horn's D.J. Green.

Jones, a senior defensive end, was an opponent's nightmare. He led the Skeeters with 25 tackles for loss and recorded 13 sacks. He also had seven quarterback pressures, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and interception and three pass breakups.

Green was the steady leader in the heart of the Jaguar defense. The senior linebacker led the team with 121 tackles (80 solo), nine tackles for loss and 10 passes defensed.

Mesquite's Robbie Robinson was named coach of the year. Just two years removed from back-to-back 1-9 seasons, Robinson led the Skeeters to 11 consecutive wins to start the season before a tough 42-28 loss to state finalist Allen in the area finals.

Here is a look at the other MISD first-team selections:

OFFENSE
