Top 10 Frisco and Little Elm Sports Stories of 2012: 6. What can Brown do for you? Lady Lobo earns three medals at state track meet

Published: Thursday, December 27, 2012 1:16 PM CST
Little Elm had five athletes qualify for the state track meet this past weekend.

With junior Marika Brown competing in the 100-meter, 200 and 4x100 relay, the Lady Lobos were well-represented at the University of Texas.

Brown didn’t disappoint at the Mike Myers Complex in Austin and finished the weekend with three top-three finishes.

“[Brown] ran well,” said Todd Dailey, Little Elm head track coach. “Her times were a little slower than normal because of the rain, but she ran fine.”

Brown joined freshman Ashlynn Giles and juniors Karissa Ellis and Alexus Giles for the relay event and came away with a second-place finish after coming in at 46.23 seconds.

The first-place team of Taije Jordan, Tayler Sanders, Ke’Andrea Wilson and Eboni Coby from Lancaster took top honors with a time of 45.85 seconds.

“Lancaster is one of the top programs in the state, if not the country,” Dailey said. “They’re pretty much the team to beat and we ran with them the whole relay.”

Little Elm’s time in the event set a new school record that likely won’t stand long, as all members of the team will return next year.

“We all wanted to win it,” Dailey said. “They ran the best time of the year and broke a school record. Lancaster was just a little bit better.”

Dailey said the returning team should have a bright future ahead though.

“If everything falls into place, it could be a big year for us next year,” Dailey said.

In the 100-meter dash, Brown earned another silver medal after finishing the event in 11.86 seconds. Beaumont Ozen’s Bealoved Brown finished just 0.03 seconds ahead of Marika Brown for the gold.

“I think they were separated by two or three inches,” Dailey said.

The Ozen athlete would earn silver in the 200 with Little Elm’s Brown finishing in third (24.41) and Ashlynn Giles earning seventh (25.06). Carrollton Newman Smith’s Courtney Okolo won gold in the event with a time of 23.87 seconds.

“I think it was a good accomplishment,” Dailey said. “And it’s something to be proud of.”

Representing the Lobos was sophomore pole-vaulter Hawk Griffin, who ended the meet with an eighth-place finish after clearing 14 feet.

“The weather wasn’t really conducive for the event,” Dailey said. “It was changing rapidly with the rain and the wind kept changing things up on us.”

At 4.26 meters, Griffin’s final mark fell 0.61 meters shy of first-place Shawn Barber of Kingwood Park.

“Overall, I think the kids performed well,” Dailey said. “They’re all coming back too.”

With Little Elm moving into a new district next season and joining the Frisco ISD schools and The Colony, Dailey said qualifying for state might not be as much of a sure thing as it appears.

“With the next district and the new region, we’ll have to prepare and look at different ways to score points,” he said. “It’ll be a little bit tougher for sure.”
