Heard's Holiday Trail of Lights returns

The Heard Natural Science Museum's fourth annual Holiday Trail of Lights is scheduled for Dec. 14-15, and will consist of a half-mile of twinkling holiday cheer and a chance to meet Father Christmas and Mother Nature.
Christmas lights along the trail are synchronized to holiday music, and hot beverages and treats will be served. The event will also feature live holiday music in the Heard's outdoor amphitheater performed by local musicians. Strolling carolers and entertainers will also complement the holiday atmosphere.
"We've had several people tell us they've come to expect it as part of their holiday tradition, so that's always a good sign," said Stephanie Jennings, Heard spokeswoman. "People are coming back year after year to see it, so we try to add a little bit more each year."
Decorating the Heard is a bit different than what they're used to, mainly because of the space and distance for which they have to spread out the lights. It takes Peterson and his crew of three to four men to complete the task, which is done over about a two or three day span and consists of roughly 200 collective hours of labor.
The Heard's holiday event stands out among others in Collin County because it's one of the only places that has an abundance of open land with which to work.
"It's not commercial," Peterson said. "This is nature's place here."
Founded in 1967, the Heard consists of a 289-acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum primarily for educating children about nature.
