More than just reading: Classes, special activities keep library busy
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The Rowlett Public Library always has things to keep everyone involved while providing an educational experience.
As part of the libraries regular offerings are its GED and ESL classes. The GED class is designed to help tutor adults that are seeking their GED.
"We have some really dedicated volunteers that are part of this program. We have been doing this for years and it has helped a lot of people," said Kathy Lane, library program coordinator.
One of the newer regular offerings of the library is the No Page Unturned readers club. The club allows participants to bring their own books and coffee or soft drinks.
"The club is off to a slow start but we think it will build. So far it has been really well received. We are just waiting for the attendance to pick up and we think it will as word about it gets around," Lane said.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, following the holiday parade the library will offer TurkeyFest. The library will open its doors for all holiday parade attendees to come make arts and crafts and to get people to check out books.
"We did it last year and it was pretty successful. We figured when we started it that it was something that would become an annual event," Lane said.
The library will have a special educational program from DART at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Representatives from DART will be at the library to answer questions people may have about DART.
The city has partnered with DART to host a grand opening event in conjunction with its annual tree-lighting event, Light Up Main Street. As part of the event the library will host its annual HolidayFest. Holiday fest will allow children to make ornaments and wreaths in addition to a performance from the Rowlett Community Chorale, who will perform from 2 to 4 p.m.
"We do this event to accentuate the holidays," Lane said.
The library will have Mr. and Mrs. Claus pay a visit on Saturday, Dec. 8, as part of its annual Gingerbread House Making event. Children will be provided a preassembled gingerbread house to decorate with candy and other edible items.
"We have been doing this for more than 10 years. It's a really great event and we have a huge turnout," Lane said. "it really is a lot of fun."
