Dog park supporters may pack council chambers

The Coppell City Council is expected to see a strong showing of support for a city dog park to be put in place when it meets in regular session at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Coppell Town Center.
Tracy Allard, who is leading a drive to get the city council to approve such a park, said as many as 100 people are expected to attend at least the citizens appearances portion of the meeting, and that two spokespersons have been appointed to use their three minutes of allotted time to ask the council to get the wheels moving for a city dog park.
Allard said a three and a half acre piece of land at MacArthur Park is being looked at as a possible site for the dog park. The proposal is that dog park would have three sections, including one for very small (tea cup size) dogs, medium size dogs and very large dogs.
At Monday night’s meeting, the park board voted to support the dog park proposal, but with the recommendation to the city council that a group be formed to obtain rights to accept tax deductible contributions to support the construction of the dog park.
Brad Reid, director of Coppell Parks and Recreation, Allard and possibly one or two others will present the proposal to the council at a 5:30 p.m. work session prior to the regular council meeting.
Allard said dog park supporters have been asked to gather in the parking lot outside Coppell Town Center at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday and then enter the building as a group.
She said a flier asking supporters to bring their dogs to the meeting was in error. She said no dogs are allowed inside the building. However, if people wish, they may bring their dogs to the parking lot.
The dog park supporters are asking the city council to revise the master plan of MacArthur Park to include the dog park.
Allard said a study has been made of dog parks in six area cities and that all but Frisco are totally funded by the city. She said Frisco requires dog park supporters to raise at least $5,000 a year to go toward the maintenance of the dog park.
Reid said the city of Coppell would likely bear the expense of maintaining Coppell’s dog park, but that users would be expected to clean up after their animals.
Allard said supporters would like to get city council approval no later than next month in order that work could begin on the dog park in January and be opened to the public by June. Construction could be delayed if the city requires a certain amount of private donations before construction can begin.
She said the dog park proposal has gained almost 700 supporters on a Facebook page, Coppell Dog Park. The supporters may be called on to provide donations before construction could begin.
