Round 2: Eagles meet familiar foe in Covenant Christian

When Legacy Christian Academy kicks off its third postseason contest tonight, the Eagles will meet a familiar foe at Bedford’s Pennington Field.
Colleyville Covenant Christian, an undefeated district rival, will go for a season sweep of LCA after defeating the Eagles 45-17 in the Nov. 9 TAPPS 2-III finale.
“We want to have a better showing this time,” said Andrew Embry, LCA head coach. “We want to play better this time around.”
“[CCC] is very good on both sides of the ball,” Embry said. “They have a very balanced team and don’t have a lot of weaknesses.”
Despite the blowout loss coming in the final week of the regular season, the Eagles managed to start the playoffs in top form by winning consecutive games against Garland Christian and Fort Worth Lake Country Christian.
The team’s most recent win came after a 280-yard and two-touchdown performance from senior running back Ovie Urevbu, who led the Eagles to a 26-19 victory over Lake Country Christian.
“[Urevbu] did a great job,” Embry said. “He just ran the ball very well and allowed us to control the clock and control the game.”
With touchdown runs of 56 and 36 yards, Urevbu passed the 2,000-yard mark on the season, tallying 2,092 yards on the ground with another 225 yards receiving to go along with 29 scores.
“We just played extremely well and did a good job of fighting for two halves,” Embry said. “We really finished the game well.”
Senior quarterback Adam Beck also had an efficient performance, completing 9-of-16 attempts for 110 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while also racking up 47 yards on 10 carries.
“[Beck] managed the game and the clock real well,” Embry said. “He did exactly what he was supposed to do.”
Beck and Urevbu allowed the LCA offense to accumulate 438 total yards while averaging nearly 7.5 yards per carry. That success on the ground has made things easier on Beck and the Eagles receivers.
“When we stay on our blocks and give some creases, it really loosens up the coverage and helps us in the passing game,” Embry said.
Senior receiver Hunter Wood was the beneficiary of that success during Friday’s victory. Wood caught five passes for 81 yards and two scores to help lead LCA to the 26-19 win.
The Eagles will now prepare for a 12-0 CCC team in a win-or-go-home format.
“We will have our hands full,” Embry said.
