Volleyball: Getting over the hump: Lady Dragons hoping to get over third-round bugaboo

During the past two seasons, Southlake Carroll's volleyball team has set a multitude of program records and claimed consecutive district titles.
Results in the playoffs, however, haven't been as desired for the Lady Dragons.
Carroll hoped to right that ship Tuesday when the Lady Dragons faced Lubbock Coronado in the regional quarterfinals from Vernon (results not available as of press time).
"Our first goal this season was to reach the regional tournament and now we are one win away," said Arthur Stanfield, Carroll head coach. "That's what we're focused on and we'll worry about the rest later."
But it won't be easy for Carroll against a Coronado team that features a pair of middle blockers destined to play Division I in college.
"They're a pair of twins that are very athletic," Stanfield said. "Looking at them on film, it looks like they are both around 5-foot-11 or 6-foot-1 range. And they also have an outside hitter who isn't as tall, but she is just a volleyball player.
"Coronado just wins a lot. They went 37-5 and were undefeated in their district, so we're going to have our hands full. We haven't really seen anyone with two strong athletes in the middle like that."
Still, a healthy Lady Dragons team is hopeful its talent and experience is enough to overcome Coronado's talent.
"If you count the play-in match we had against Rockwall Heath, we've played three playoff caliber opponents in the past week and won all three in straight sets," Stanfield said, "We're rocking and rolling right now and hopefully that continues."
Last Tuesday, in the bi-district round, Carroll defeated North Crowley (25-11, 25-10, 25-6). Friday, the Lady Dragons swept Amarillo Tascosa (25-17, 25-14, 25-12).
Against Tascosa, Danielle Proskovec led the Carroll attack with 15 kills, while Maddie McCollough had 23 assists and Cat McCoy posted 19 digs.
"All three of them have been playing at a very high level the last three matches," Stanfield said. "Against Tascosa, I think we were about 12-12 in the first set but then we pulled away. Other than that, we weren't really pressured at all during the last two playoff matches."
A Carroll win means the Lady Dragons would face Colleyville Heritage in the regional semifinals at 6 p.m. Friday from the Glen Rose ISD Tiger Arena.
