Cross country: Dragons win respective regional titles, Marcus boys and girls advance

Published: Saturday, November 10, 2012 12:47 AM CST
Last season, Hebron cross country runner Robert Domanic advanced all the way to the UIL Class 5A State State Championships despite not winning a gold medal at either his district or regional meet.

In 2012, Domanic will again be headed to state, but this time he will make his trip as the District 5-5A and Region I champion.

Domanic took top honors Saturday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock (14:41.90), finishing well ahead of El Paso Franklin's Brian Barraza (14:52.80). Southlake Carroll's Joe Sansone - who earned first at regionals last year - claimed the bronze medal. Marcus will also be heading to Round Rock for a second consecutive year after finishing second with Flower Mound and Hebron in seventh and eighth, respectively.

Carroll's domination didn't stop on the boys side as the Lady Dragons (39) finished well ahead of Marcus (99) for first. Hebron (103) placed third in the girls meet ahead of fourth-place Flower Mound (105) just one week after the Lady Jaguars outpaced the Lady Hawks at the 5-5A Championships.

The top three teams as well as individuals that place in the top 10 from non-qualifying programs advanced to state Saturday at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock (results not available as of press time).

While the Dragons did not procure an individual gold, Carroll took first on the strength of four top-eight runs. Following Sansone was Nate Sullivan in fourth (14:59.20), Connor Hendrickson in seventh (15:15.60), Trevor Gilley in eighth (15:24.70), Jacob Pickle in 20th (15:41.50), Eli Canal in 21st (15:46.00) and Alec Garner in 39th (16:07.00).

The rest of the Hawks lineup featured James Bodnar in 17th (15:39.50), Chase Von Voorhis in 67th (16:33.00), Andrew Clark in 84th (16:49.40), Brady Andrew in 105th (17:05.20) and Michael Summers in 109th (17:08.30).

From Marcus, Logan Hendrix placed fifth (15:08.70), with Adam Steele in 24th (15:51.90), Jacob Babbidge in 29th (15:54.90), Evan Durrill in 30th (15:56.90), Luke Hendrix in 41st (16:10.00), Luke Page in 43rd (16:14.10) and Drew Guenther in 46th (16:15.20).

"After last year, our guys were very determined," said Steve Telaneus, Marcus head coach. "We established our position early and were in good shape and we were solidly in third most of the way. We ran well and had a hard charge at the end, too. Everyone did a good job."

Coppell's Carson Vickroy competed after finishing fourth at district and took 38th in Lubbock (16:06.70), while Flower Mound's Zachariah Hamstra took 10th (15:28.30) to advance.

Courtney Krieghauser and Shelby Chapin picked up medals for the Lady Dragons as the pair finished in second and third, respectively. Last year, Chapin won the region en route to a sixth-place finish at state. Krieghauser, meanwhile, won silver at state last season and took third at regionals.

Rounding out the Carroll runners were Antigone Archer in ninth (17:47.20), Elena Arriaza in 11th (17:49.20), Madison Keen in 17th (18:27.20), Katie Burnham in 18th (18:28.90) and Taylor Ullman in 36th (19:13.10).

Megan Montgomery crossed the line in fifth for the Lady Hawks (17:43.30), with Alondra Hoyos in 10th (17:47.50), Anna Elkin in 31st (19:05.00), Stefani Doyle in 34th (19:11.90), Rachel Jones in 41st (19:16.00), Lauren Halliday in 63rd (19:39.80) and Caroline Paulette in 104th (20:24.20).

Sydney Brown (17:45.70) and Madeline Reed (17:47.20) placed seventh and eighth, respectively, for the Lady Marauders, with Peyton Brown in 21st (18:39.80), Devon Cruz in 35th (19:12.70), Emma Blair 43rd (19:21.60), Miciah Derenzo in 56th (19:36.10) and Polei Jeacock in 67th (19:43.70). Marcus was in fourth position with 600 meters remaining before making up ground down the stretch.

"We knew it was going to be very tight and it was," Telaneus said. "Carroll clearly had first, and we kind of figured that coming in. But it was close after that and we were able to make up 14 points at the end to finish three points ahead of Hebron and six or seven ahead of Flower Mound."

The Lady Jaguars, meanwhile, ran in a pack but came up short in the final standings. Leading the charge on the girls side for Flower Mound was Catalina Uriarte in 12th (18:05.60), Rebecca Jacobson in 24th (18:44.00), Safiya Belbina in 27th (18:52.00), Brittney White in 28th (18:52.10), Kirsten Zeller in 29th (18:54.90), Katie Bouton in 32nd (19:08.90) and Cassidy Allen in 45th (19:23.10).

Flower Mound was also dealing with injuries to multiple runners.

"If they were healthy, they probably beat us," Telaneus added. "We got a nice break."

The rest of boys competing for Flower Mound included Andrew McRae in 19th (15:41.10), Matthew Schleder in 27th (15:53.90), Wesley Ward in 85th (16:49.50), Adam Tremonte in 86th (16:50.00), Drew Sanderson in 117th (17:14.30) and Nicholas Costanza in 126th (17:20.10).

Now Marcus shifts its focus to state, where the Dragons and Lady Dragons will be favored to repeat as champs.

"You can't worry about them" Telaneus said. "They beat us last year and have been beating everyone, really. We have a simple plan to do what we need and we have to do our best from that perspective. That's what we've done at district and regionals or any meet for that matter. If we stick to our plan, we're confident we're a top six team and if we have a great day or somebody slips up, maybe we can get in there and steal a medal."

At the 4A level, The Colony's boys and girls as well as Newman Smith's boys competed at the Region II Championships at Vandergriff Park in Arlington.

The Trojans (160) and Cougars (168) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while the Lady Cougars placed sixth (157). Highland Park won team titles for both boys (84) and girls (69).

Individually, Blake Anderson procured a silver medal for the Cougars (15:44.70), while Smith's Daniel Debes will also be headed to state after finishing 10th (16:05.50).

The rest of the Cougars included Martin Mirzaie in 32nd (16:37.90), Brandon Rojo in 33rd (16:38.10), Gregory Vasquez in 61st (17:11.00), Glenn Gress in 76th (17:28.50), Hector Larin in 103rd (17:56.10) and Samuel Steele in 114th (18:16.40).

For Smith, Jeffrey Moore placed 12th (16:12.30) with Gerson Lagunez in 48th (16:55.30), Kevin Debes in 62nd (17:12.40), Ricardo Salinas in 68th (17:20.40), Rolando Bueno De La Cruz in 96th (17:49.80) and Luis Cabello in 113th (18:15.10).

Olivia Brookshire was the top finisher for the Lady Cougars in 28th (19:51.10) with Elisabeth Richins in 31st (19:56.10), Emily Casper in 32nd (19:57.80), Victoria Avila in 40th (20:18.60), Elizabeth Tubbs in 52nd (20:30.80), Sara Brashears in 70th (21:03.30) and Jennifer Labrada in 72nd (21:04.50).
