Cross country: Season under way for The Colony, Coppell

Published: Tuesday, August 28, 2012 3:56 PM CDT
While the high school football season gets underway this weekend, many cross country programs in the area kicked off their respective campaigns last weekend, including teams from The Colony and Coppell.

The Cougars opened the season Friday when they competed in the Frisco Invitational.

The squad finished third as a team on the boys side (105) behind Plano West (29) and Jesuit (92), while the Lady Cougars placed ninth (200). The top three finishers in girls action were Ursuline Academy (67), Allen (69) and Frisco (79).

Individually, the Cougars were paced by Blake Anderson in 10th (17:21.28), Brandon Rojo in 13th (17:35.44), Martin Mirzaie in 16th (17:43.06), Scout Anderson in 33rd (18:33.91), Glenn Gress in 35th (18:41.56), Samuel Steele in 40th (18:57.94), Gregory Vasquez in 41st (18:59.78), Hector Larin in 72nd (20:26.44) and Vicente Mendoza in 77th (20:46.31).

In girls action, Elizabeth Tubbs led the way in 21st (21:42.47) and was followed by Emily Casper in 29th (22:03.38), Victoria Avila in 50th (24:01.75), Lisa Richins in 63rd (26:03.41) and Olivia Saye in 70th (27:20.47).

Coppell, meanwhile, competed in the 29th annual Greenhill 6-Mile Relay Saturday in Dallas.

The team showed marked improvements on both sides, with the girls finishing third and the boys in fifth - its highest finish in the last five years.

The Cowboys, which featured Carson Vickroy, Shane Murray, Brantley Young and Clayton Hemphill, dropped 2:08 off their time from 2011 to finish second, just nine seconds off the first-place pace of a team from Norman, Okla. Last year, Coppell took 10th.

Coppell's second boys team also showed well, improving its time by 1:32 to finish ninth after placing 12th last season.

The Cowgirls top team, which consisted of Alyssa Moino, Grace Barden, Katie Sandfort and Jenna Hernandez took third after earning fifth in 2011.

Both The Colony and Coppell continue this weekend at the Marcus Invitational, which features all of Coppell's District 5-5A opponents and every Region I finalist from last season. The meet takes place at North Lakes Park in Denton.
