Win or go home: Lady Bobcats set for postseason run

Published: Wednesday, October 24, 2012 1:06 PM CDT
The Lady Bobcats hope the third time will be the charm.

After qualifying for the postseason each of the last two years, Celina has earned a third consecutive trip to the playoffs after posting a 4-4 mark against District 10-3A opponents this season.

“Nothing is a given,” said Billy Coleman, Celina head coach. “Crazy stuff can happen in the playoffs.”

Celina will be looking to make an extended run after early exits in 2011 (3-0 loss to Prosper) and 2010 (3-0 loss to Lovejoy). Coleman said this year’s team has a good shot to win multiple playoff matchups.

“The girls are excited,” he said. “They have a good chance to get to the regional quarterfinals. Once you get there, who knows what can happen.”

The Lady Bobcats (23-15) will be entering their bi-district matchup as the third seed from their district after a 3-0 loss to Frisco Lone Star on Friday.

“For whatever reason, we just don’t play very good against Lone Star,” Coleman said. “I don’t know why, but we struggle against them for some reason.”

The Lady Bobcats also dropped a four-set match to the Lady Rangers earlier in the season. Those losses allowed Lone Star to enter the playoffs as the second-place team behind unbeaten Argyle (8-0).

“If we play up to our capability, we have a real good chance to make it to the regional tournament,” Coleman said. “We might even have an eventual match with Argyle.”

Celina’s first opponent will be Gainesville or Krum in a bi-district match.

“We don’t know much about [Gainesville] right now,” Coleman said. “They’ve competed against some really good teams this year though.”

The two teams are slated for a Saturday seeding match that will determine Celina’s next opponent.

The Lady Bobcats will enter the contest with a healthy team that will also be coming off a long break in action. The team will go 11 days without a match, with the team not playing any warm-up games before postseason play.

“We’ll have some tough practices and stay ready,” Coleman said.

It should help matters that Celina played some of the top teams in the area throughout the course of the season. Those matches should prepare the Lady Bobcats for postseason action against the likes of Gainesville or Krum.

“[Argyle and Decatur] are two of the best teams in the region,” Coleman said. “So we should be prepared for any opponent.”

With specifics of Celina’s first-round match not yet determined, Coleman said his team is working on being prepared for any scenario.

“Either way you’re going to have to play some really good teams to get to the regional tournament,” he said. “This is what you work hard all season long for.”
