Giving back to community: Medical center reaching out to help seniors
By Kenny Green, kgreen@starlocalnews.com
The holidays are a time for giving and Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale wants to give back to the community it serves. The medical center is partnering with radio station KLUV 98.7 and Sharing Life Outreach to gather gift cards as part of a project to assist senior citizens during the holidays. They are calling the project Sharing Life with Luv.
"Our goal is to obtain 300 or more gift cards before Dec. 14," said Darby Chalko, TRMC-Sunnyvale's interim director of business development. "We would like to receive enough to purchase at least $25 in gifts for each recipient."
Area residents can donate gift cards via TRMC-Sunnyvale's website or at any of several special events in the coming weeks. Gift cards can also be dropped off at Sharing Life Outreach.
Beginning Monday, Nov. 19, those wishing to donate may go to TRMC-Sunnyvale's website, http://www.TexasRegionalMedicalCenter.com, to purchase gift cards.
"This is Texas Regional Medical Center at Sunnyvale's way of giving back to the community for all the support it's shown the hospital in the last few years," Chalko said. "An project like this has a way of boosting morale in the community."
The project will have several gift-card collection events. The events will kick off on Black Friday, Nov. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the upper-level main entrance of Town East Mall. KLUV radio personality Jenny Q will be on hand to accept gift cards.
"Town East Mall is one of the busiest malls in the state on Black Friday. We wanted to start the collection events somewhere where there was lots of traffic and gift cards could be bought," Chalko said.
The other collection events are from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Albertsons grocery store, 8505 Lakeview Pkwy., in Rowlett. KLUV radio personalities will be there to accept gift cards. The final collection event is from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Albertsons, 1500 S. Belt Line Road, in Mesquite. KLUV radio personalities will be there to accept gift cards.
A luncheon for the seniors and an unveiling of the total amount of the gift cards collected is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14, at Sharing Life's office, 3544 E. Emporium Circle, in Mesquite. Radio personality Jody Dean will be present at the luncheon announce the total.
