The 2012 Tom Thumb Texas Stampede opens its gates this weekend sporting world-class rodeo and headlining concerts at the Allen Event Center.

Tradition, pride and culture will be on display beginning at 10 a.m. Friday with the Western Heritage Festival, which runs until 10 p.m. both days of the celebration. The festival will feature a petting zoo, pony rides, stick horse races and the always-popular mutton-bustin' competition. A western marketplace will also be included.

Rodeo chutes open at 7:30 p.m. Friday when nearly 400 of the top cowboys and cowgirls in the world representing the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the Women's Professional Rodeo Association cinch up for what promises to be a wild ride. Dallas-based Carr Pro Rodeo is contracted to provide the bulk of the production and bucking stock.

"Any bucking horse you know you have a chance to win on is one you want to get on," said Jesse James Kirby, saddle bronc rider from Dodge City, Kan. "That's what you have when you go to a Carr rodeo. I think Pete Carr is doing a ... fine job of supplying a bunch of really good bucking horses."

Following Friday's rodeo will be Tracy Lawrence, who is scheduled to take the stage at approximately 10 p.m. The rodeo resumes at noon on Saturday, with the finals set for 7:30 p.m. The culmination of the rodeo will be followed by Lee Brice up on stage.

"We are proud and excited to re-establish our partnership with the PRCA to bring this quality of rodeo competition to the Allen Event Center," said Christopher Carter, president of Tom Thumb Texas Stampede.

Executive director Zandy Carnes noted the beneficiaries of the Stampede.

"We're getting back to our mission. Not only are we providing an event that's going to entertain the crowds with the (musical) performances and the high caliber of (rodeo) contestants, but it also brings back the focus of why we do this, and that's the kids."

Carnes said the funds raised at this year's Tom Thumb Texas Stampede will be spread among several entities, including Camp Jon Marc and ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship. Camp Jon Marc is dedicated to helping families of children with special needs such as chronic illnesses and major physical disabilities. ManeGait provides adults and children with disabilities the opportunity to move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of the horse.
