Fall events aplenty: Library offers visitors plenty of fun

Published: Monday, October 29, 2012 11:10 AM CDT
The Mesquite Public Library has a variety of programs this fall to reach out to residents to entice them to come and visit the library.

The library will offer its annual Halloween Happenings event from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29.

"In the past we did a haunted house. This year we will be doing something different. We will have a variety of activities that will all center on a magic show," said Jeannie Johnson, library director.

Among the popular monthly activities for children are the craft times. The library will offer a variety of different types of craft sessions this fall. At the main library on Nov. 16 the children will create a Thanksgiving Day craft, on Dec. 6 the group will make cards for soldiers, on Dec. 13 a holiday craft will be made to celebrate the holidays in December, a Christmas craft will be made on Dec. 20 and on Dec. 27 the children will make another holiday craft themed around the upcoming new year. All craft sessions at the main library are at 4:30 p.m. The branch library will offer a Thanksgiving craft at 4 p.m. on Nov. 15.

"The craft programs we offer help the children with motor skills. I had a teacher thank me for us offering them because they don't do as many crafts in schools anymore as they used to. It also helps the children with their creativity," Johnson said. "We have been doing this for a while. We will also have a small carnival set up. The event is something for us to celebrate the holiday."

The branch library will offer its science club at 4 p.m. Nov. 1 and 8. The club features activities that prove scientific theories in a fun way.

"They have made parachutes in the past to test the theory of gravity. They also built a bridge and talked about ways to make it stronger," Johnson said. "The club is about letting children know science can be fun and they can do it outside of school."

The library offers a variety of computer classes to residents as well including basic computer, Microsoft Word, internet usage and email. The main library offers its classes at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays and all classes are on a first come, first serve basis. The branch library offers its computer classes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays. The branch library asks participants to register for its classes in advance.
