Bad name, great taste

I went to Westfest Czech and Polka Festival this past weekend, found something I was looking for and ate something that sounded awful.

What I found that I was looking for was a hotdog hat. I grill hot dogs once a month for Hot Dog Day at the Carrollton Senior Center, and I thought it would be cool to wear a hot dog hat to promote the event. Now that I have found the hat, I can focus on getting a hot dog costume.

Another thing that I found while at Westfest was an interesting food item called "skunk eggs." Most people would not taste something with a name like that, but it only intrigued me more because I love trying exotic and interesting food. Needless to say it was extremely yummy, and I would definitely eat it again.

Have any of you eaten a skunk egg? What is the most exotic or interesting food item you have eaten and where can I find it?

Busy Friends

Another thing I did while at Westfest was visit the West Public Library booth. I think it is important to support libraries any way that we can because they make such a big difference in communities.

While there I bought a bottle of water, a carton of cascarones, which I believe they make themselves, and joined the West Public Library Friends group-all for $9. Easy cascarones instructions are at http://pbskids.org/zoom/activities/do/cascarones.html.

There are a lot of other Friends groups that are busy this month. For example, the Little Elm Friends of the Library Adult Literacy-sponsored Public Bazaar and Business Expo is taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Little Elm Community Center,107 Hardwicke. Hot Dogs will be available for $1 each, $1.50 for two, or $2 for a combo which includes hot dog, chips, and drink.

This is a great chance to stop by and pick up lunch while shopping the Expo and then buy a few extra for dinner so you can kick back and relax for the evening. Children age three years and up get a prize with the purchase of a combo.

Vendors for the event will be announced next week. For more information about the Public Bazaar and Business Expo, contact me at 214-673-2361 or email tinahager147@yahoo.com.

That same day, the Friends of The Colony Public Library will be holding their Meet the Authors and Illustrators from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, followed by their Fall Membership meeting at 4:30 p.m. The featured speaker will be Robin Cole Jett.

For more information about The Colony Friends of the Library event, contact Librarian Nancy Boykin at 972-624-3178 or email nboykin@thecolonypl.org.

Bargains here, freebies there, coupons everywhere

It is amazing how many freebie and coupon sites there are. The newest freebie site I have signed up for is called Bargain Diner at www.bargaindiner.com. Since I get so many emails in a day's time, it is hard to catch all the freebie newsletters at the right time because I am not on the computer all day. I am learning that the sooner you act on the deals that come in the bargain newsletters, the better chance you have at being one of the people who can get a freebie before they run out.

One of the free samples I have received so far is a box with three Starbucks coffee k-cups. I really look forward to checking the mailbox. It is like Christmas every day.

I have also decided to actually organize my coupons so I can start using them more. I went to Kroger today and found a lot of things on sale, but I especially kept my eyes out for the wonderful orange and yellow "Manager Special" stickers that go on products close to the expiration date. I found a pot roast for $5 that was normally $15, so guess what I cooked for dinner?

The best thing is when you have a coupon for something that is on sale or "special.". Do you have some favorite freebie or coupon sites? What are some free samples you have received?

Well, that is it for now, but thanks for reading "tidbits." I look forward to hearing your responses to my questions of the week. Send an email to tinahager147@yahoo.com or leave me a note on Facebook at www.facebook.com/mstinaknows.
