Sooners nab Plano gymnast

Chayse Capps, a gymnast from Plano-based Infinite Bounds, will ply her craft at the collegiate level with Oklahoma.

Set to sign her National Letter of Intent Wednesday, Capps has been trained at Infinite Bounds since she was 1 year old. Since then, she has amassed a resume that includes two appearances at nationals, a regional floor championship plus state vault and floor championships in 2011.

In 2012, Capps retained her state floor title and became the national vault silver medalist at the Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships.

"I was born and will always be a Texan," Capps said, "but I could not pass up the opportunity to compete for the best Division I gymnastic team, which is also the closest to home. I am excited to become part of such a successful gymnastics team in Oklahoma."

Missimo tabbed all-Big Ten

At Prestonwood Christian Academy, Cole Missimo was no stranger to achievements on the pitch.

That success has translated to Northwestern.

In his first season with the Wildcats, Missimo has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. The former Lion played in all 19 matches this year, starting six in the midfield, and had the second-most minutes played on the team by a freshman.

Blalock seeking trip to Pro Bowl

Atlanta Falcons offensive lineman Justin Blalock, a Plano East alum, has been an important component to the team's 8-0 start.

Now, he is seeking a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Fans interested in supporting Blalock's cause can go to: nfl.com/probowl/ballot.

Blalock is listed in the NFC sub-category under offense and guard. The names are in alphabetical order, so Blalock is near the top. Voting closes in less than three weeks, but fans can vote as often as they want until then.

O'Day named all-UAA

Case Western Reserve sophomore forward Patrick O'Day, a Plano Senior alum, has been named to the All-University Association men's soccer team.

O'Day was an honorable mention pick.

The former Wildcat, last year's UAA Co-Rookie of the Year, ranked second on Case Western this season with nine points on four goals and an assist. In two college seasons, O'Day has totaled 40 points on 15 goals and 10 assists. He is tied for seventh in team history in goals and ranks ninth in points.

West ranked in TABC hoops poll

Both the Plano West boys and girls basketball teams made an appearance in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason poll.

The Lady Wolves, fresh off their fourth consecutive district championship, ranked in at No. 8 in the state while their male counterparts, who finished 27-9 last season, were tabbed at No. 15 overall.

Both the Prestonwood Christian Academy and John Paul II boys and girls teams found their way onto their respective TAPPS rankings as well.

The Prestonwood boys, who captured their second TAPPS Division I Championship in three years last season, will open the season as the favorite to repeat with a No. 1 ranking in the large school boys poll, while the Lady Lions were listed at No. 9 on the girls side.

The Cardinals, last year's TAPPS Div. I runner-up, open up the 2012-13 season ranked No. 10 while the Lady Cardinals, fresh off another appearance in the state tournament, are at No. 2 behind Bishop Lynch.

DFW Coaches clinic

High school coaches have a chance to learn from their own.

On Jan. 23-25, Embassy Suites Outdoor World at DFW Airport will be the site of a DFW Coaches Clinic, featuring a litany of high school coaches as speakers.

Sixteen 50-minute lectures will be given by the coaches on hand, with attendees slated to enjoy a Friday night "Chalk Talk" and dinner with one of the state's top offensive or defensive minds.

There will also be a Texas Hold-Em tournament on Friday, an FCA lecture on Saturday, plus a $1,000 cash prize up for grabs after the last lecture on Sunday.

The clinic's registration fee is $70 if mailed in by Jan. 18 and $80 afterwards. To pre-register, visit the clinic website at coachesclinic.net.

Mickey Mitchell tears ACL

The Prestonwood Christian Academy football and boys basketball teams received unpleasant news Monday, learning that sophomore Mickey Mitchell has suffered a torn ACL.

The Lions starting quarterback, Mitchell injured his knee during the first play of Friday's matchup against Bishop Lynch. Prestonwood went on to lose their third consecutive game in a 35-13 decision to the Friars.

On the season, Mitchell had thrown for 1,855 yards, 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 773 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Mitchell's father Ken confirmed the injury, which bears effects on the ball-court as well.

Mickey is the No. 5-ranked hoopster in the nation for the Class of 2015 according to ESPN and was slated to be an integral piece in the Lions' bid for a repeat as TAPPS Division I State Champions.

A squad already low on experience, Prestonwood will soldier on behind seniors Julius Randle and Marquan Botley when taking the floor Nov. 23 against Madison Prep in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest.

Get Golf Ready coming to Plano

Women looking to learn about or hone their golf game are in luck.

Now under way, and running through Dec. 13, the PGA Tour Superstore in Plano will be offering a women's Get Golf Ready program. An alternative means of learning the ins and outs of the game, Get Golf Ready consists of five lessons taught by a PGA professional, starting at $99.

The PGA Tour Superstore is located at 8700 Preston Road.

Landry Award nominations

For the third straight year, North Texas GMC Dealers will present the area's top high school football player with The Landry Award.

The honor recognizes the Metroplex's top high school player. The recipient will be chosen by a voting panel of former coaches and players, media members and local leaders. The Landry Award program will also recognize the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.

Fans can vote at: LandryAward.com.

Five finalists will be announced in November with 2012's official winner named Dec. 6 at a ceremony at the Communities Foundation of Texas.

Wildcats, Lions in DFW Hoopfest

The Plano Senior and Prestonwood Christian Academy boys basketball teams won't have to let the Thanksgiving festivities simmer.

The Lions and Wildcats are in action Nov. 23-24 at the fourth annual Thanksgiving Hoopfest.

A two-day showcase that features teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Florida, Plano opens the event Nov. 23 with a 10 a.m. tipoff against Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill, ranked No. 16 in the state among large private schools by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

The Lions are No. 1 in that same poll and will be one of the feature attractions for the event.

Prestonwood takes the floor Nov. 23 at 4 p.m. against Madison Prep (La.) and again at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in the showcase finale versus Duncanville.

Wesley sets record

Plano East alum Brandon Wesley continues to soar on the collegiate gridiron.

Now a junior at Bucknell, Wesley has carved out his name in Bison lore as the program's all-time completions leader. Competing 22 passes against Colgate on Oct. 27, Wesley upped his career total to 425 to break Scott Auerbach's record of 418 -- a mark that had stood since 1989.

And Wesley may not be done.

He is just seven pass attempts, 402 yards of total offense and 726 passing yards behind records also held by Auerbach. In 2012, Wesley has thrown for 1,425 yards and four touchdowns on 138-of-228 attempts to go with two rushing touchdowns.
