Same song, different verse: Boyd once again sweeps Skyline in playoff opener

RICHARDSON -- The McKinney Boyd volleyball team has been stuck in a first round playoff pattern for the last three years, but it's a successful one they don't mind in the least.
For the third straight year, the Lady Broncos began the postseason with a sweep of Dallas Skyline, with this latest iteration (25-10, 25-8, 25-13) occurring Tuesday night at Richardson Berkner.
"We played very well tonight, we started out sharp," said Kelly Quinn, Boyd head coach. "We've faced each other three years in a row now. Their kids fought, but we played well."
Megan Mollett led the way with seven kills, followed by Krista Bukovec, who had six. Kaley Seaber had a team-high 14 digs, followed by Haley Dickschat's eight.
Boyd (33-7) leapt out to a commanding 11-1 lead over Skyline (13-14) in the first set, setting the tone for the sweep. The Lady Broncos were just as strong to the jump in the second set, leading 13-2 to start.
Skyline never lead once in any of the three sets and were only tied three times the entire night, first at 2-2, then at 4-4 and 6-6, all occurring at the start of the third set.
"We played well, especially the first two sets, we were very crisp," Quinn said. "The third set we got a few more hitting and service errors, but we'll improve."
Skyline would show more fight in the final set, trailing by only four halfway through at 15-11. The Lady Broncos, though, would regroup and take control the rest of the way, coasting to the three-set victory.
In addition to Mollett, Bukovec, Seaber and Dickschat, Quinn was also pleased with the contributions of Bayle Bingaman, Emma Meyer, Kelly Koop, Tori Turck, and Parker Shepherd.
"Bailey played great tonight," Quinn said. "Emma was on fire in the middle and so was Krista and Kelly and Megan are always standouts on the outside. Our setters did a good job, too, getting in there and mixing up the offense, so Tori and Parker did great. I'm very pleased with our win tonight."
Quinn is also encouraged for what she sees in the program's future.
"Ashleigh Martin and Meagan Elkins, my two sophomores, they played great tonight," she said. "They came in the third game and played great. Our program has got a bright future."
Quinn knows that it's crucial for this to be the template if the team hopes to return to the state finals.
"We were able to see a lot of playing time for all of the girls. It was good to get everyone in. That's the best win, as far as I'm concerned," Quinn said. "When we can look at our stats and have nearly every kid have five or more kills, you know that that's a team effort and it really was tonight. Everyone stepped up tonight."
While her team was strong for much of the night, Quinn admits there's always room for improvement.
"We need to improve on our balls in the net," she said. "Anything that's tight on the net, we're kind of backing off on it. We've been working on it recently, but that's something we have to continue to work on."
The Lady Broncos move on to Friday's area final, getting them one step closer to their ultimate goal.
"This is a seasoned team as far as playoffs are concerned," Quinn said. "We know what the road ahead of us is; it's long. We got six more games left if we want to be state champions."
