Southlake Oktoberfest
The 11th annual Southlake Oktoberfest, presented by Texas Nissan of Grapevine and hosted by the Southlake Chamber of Commerce, takes place Oct. 5-7 at Southlake Town Square and promises traditional favorites, plus new attractions and live entertainment. Admission is free to the public.
* Approximately 100 arts and crafts exhibitors selling handmade wares
* Food vendors serving everything from hamburgers to bratwurst
* Die Festalle (festival) tent serving a variety of beer and wine
* Newly created "Sports Zone" featuring a 9-foot by 16-foot television screen airing college and NFL games
* Wiener dog parade, costume contest and races -online registration available
* Children's area with games, train rides, bounce houses and rock climbing wall
The popular wiener dog races will take place at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 6., preceded by a wiener dog parade at 10:15 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. or register online at: https://secure1.voloper.net/oktoberfestsouthlake/entry-form.aspx.
Live entertainment will take place throughout the weekend, including both local performers and headlining acts:
* 9:30 p.m. Oct. 5 - Emerald City
* 9:30 p.m. Oct. 6 - Le Freak
* 1:45 p.m. Oct. 7 - Professor D
Southlake Oktoberfest is free admission to the public. Hours of operation are Friday 5-11 p.m. Oct. 5, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Oct. 6 and noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 7.

National Night Out
National Night Out will take place from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 2 at Town Square.
There will have lots of great giveaways for kids and adults including important public safety information.
Plus, kids will have a blast getting to see the fire trucks and police vehicles including a police patrol motorcycle. Southlake firefighters and police officers love to let the kids climb in and take a look an inside. Children also enjoy sitting on a real police motorcycle.
National Night Out is a great opportunity for children to meet and talk to the men and women who help protect them and their families.

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month
September is National Emergency Preparedness Month and that means time to get the home, school, church or business ready in case of an emergency. If residents take some simple steps now, they will be better prepared later.
During the month of September, the city of Southlake's DPS division will be providing information and tips to help residents plan ahead. For example: Do you know every item that you should have available in an emergency kit? Most people know they should have additional water and non-perishable food, but there are many items that you may not think about putting in your emergency kit.
Do you have a plan to get your family, students, church members and employees out of "harm's way" safely? It's not enough to simply have a plan - it's also important to practice it because you never know when an emergency will strike. Are you prepared?

Local cities to combine animal control services
Southlake will soon be providing improved animal control services beginning in October of this year. Southlake's Department of Public Safety will join with the city of Colleyville to move all animal control services to the city of Keller.
The benefits to this plan are numerous and it is cost effective for the city and its citizens.
"Southlake DPS is committed to providing excellent City services to our residents. This multi-city agreement will add convenience and improved services to the citizens of Southlake whether it is help in finding a lost family pet or providing assistance with an animal control problem especially during nights and weekends," said Police Chief Stephen Mylett.
All three cities will share in the cost of the Animal Control Services Agreement. Initial cost for the city of Southlake will be $66,542.
The city of Keller will begin housing lost pets and animals from Southlake and Colleyville in October 2012 at its current facility. The new Keller Regional Animal Adoption Center will be 9,400 square feet and will be located at the Keller Police Department at 330 Rufe Snow Drive.
"The city of Keller is committed to this joint project, and we are working to have the new animal and adoption facility completed by spring 2014," said Keller Police Chief Mark Hafner.
Key points of the multi-city agreement include:
*Full-time and on-call animal control services.
*Improved animal control services during nights and weekends.
*Annual cost savings of $15,677 per year to the city of Southlake.
*Residents will be able to find lost pets at a facility that is closer to home.
*Continued assistance with feral hogs or other wild animals.
*Southlake will amend the animal control ordinance to require registration of pets.

This new multi-agency agreement continues the city of Southlake's commitment to excellence through another great partnership with the cities of Keller and Colleyville.
'Fall Through the Lens' exhibit held
The "Fall Through the Lens," a photographic exhibit, is being held in the main lobby on the second floor of Southlake Town Hall. The exhibit will be on display now through Oct. 31.
The "Fall Through the Lens" reception and photography exhibit is sponsored by the Southlake Arts Council, APEX Arts League, Southlake Public Library and the Bob Jones Nature Center Organization.

The exhibit of the fine photographic works of artist/photographer Bruce Rosenstiel will be in the Southlake Town Hall lobby.

Town hall railing project
Orange safety netting went up Aug. 30, marking the beginning the town hall railing improvement project.
The railings that were originally installed on both the north and south sides of the building have been rusting and causing stains on the steps into both the north and south entrances of the building. The city staff has been working for quite some time to develop a solution to the problem which is primarily caused by water building up inside of the railing, rusting over time and then spilling out onto the granite steps.
The staff worked with a contractor to come up with a new design to stop this problem going forward. The old railings for one half of each entrance were removed and new railings will be replaced next week. Before the installation of the new railings occurs, the granite steps will be cleaned to remove the rust stains from the steps. The process will then be repeated for the other half of the railings. The project is scheduled to be complete in time for the Southlake's Chamber of Commerce's Okotoberfest, Oct. 5-7.
Fall Southlake Scene released
The Southlake Community Services Department is in full swing planning for an eventful fall. Mark your calendars, the fall 2012 Southlake Scene is available online.
Residents will find schedules and information about "Home for the Holidays," the grand opening of North Park events for the family, children's activities, athletic programs and much more.
For the first year, Southlake Recreation is now offering Holiday Break Camp Mania. The Southlake Scene is a community activity guide published by the Southlake Community Services Department. The guide is available at www.SouthlakeParksandRec.com.

New online job application system continues
Applying for a job at the city of Southlake just got easier. With the launch of NEOGOV, the city has a system that joins state and local agencies across the country in accepting employment applications online.
Applicants will use this new system much like many of the other job search sites, by creating a user profile with all their relevant information and work history. Because of the secure server, applicant information can be saved at any point and retrieved later, right where the user left off in the process. Another benefit of NEOGOV is that applicants can use this same information to apply for jobs with the city of Southlake and also with more than 800 other public sector and education organizations nationwide that use this system. The new system also eliminates the need for paper applications.
If applicants are interested in jobs that are not open, they can fill out a job interest card to alert them by email when a new job they are interested in is posted. Now, potential applicants can receive news of any opening when it occurs instead of needing to check the city's website each week.
For applicant convenience, the system can be accessed from any computer with internet access 24 hours a day, 365 days a year through www.cityofsouthlakejobs.com. In addition computer kiosks are available in the human resources office during regular business hours.
