'The Nutcracker' ballet to be performed at Marcus

Published: Friday, October 5, 2012 4:10 PM CDT
For the first time in its history, the LakeCities Ballet Theatre (LBT) will perform its version of "The Nutcracker" ballet outside Lewisville.

During Monday's city council meeting, the LBT requested arts support grant money for its performance to be held at Marcus High School. Normally, grant money may only be used for exhibits or performances conducted within Lewisville. However, Lewisville High School's Stuver Auditorium was recently torn down. The reconstructed auditorium is expected to be completed by December 2013.

The Lewisville City Council unanimously approved the LBT request.

The city council also approved an agreement for architectural services with Brown Reynolds Watford Architects to serve as architects for the design of the joint police/fire training facility. The contract is for $137,000. Brown Reynolds also designed Lewisville's fire station No. 7.

The city council also approved a bid award to RKM Utility Services Inc. for the Old Orchard drainage improvements project for $308,017. The contract consists of the installation of storm drains in Old Orchard Drive from Kingston Drive south about 700 feet, including pavement repair.

The city council also approved the 2010 State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) Grant and a supplemental appropriation for $20,472 to the 2012-13 grant fund. The Lewisville Fire Department received a sub-recipient grant from the Texas Department of Public Safety for personal protective equipment for the city's S.W.A.T. team. The money was unused in the original awarded jurisdiction and re-allocated to the city of Lewisville.

The city council approved a Texas Criminal Justice Grant award of $21,504 for the sex offender adherence program. The Lewisville Police Department (LPD) applied for funding to conduct quarterly compliance inspections to ensure that all sex offenders are living at the designated location required by their registration.

The city council also approved a Texas Criminal Justice Division Prevention of Violence Against Women grant award for $62,443. The LPD applied for the funding of one investigator in accordance with the prevention of Violence Against Women Act Grant program. The primary duties of the investigator are to "aggressively and thoroughly investigate domestic violence offenses and provide referral services to victims." The grant will pay 65 percent of the costs. The city's portion is projected to be $33,623 for the grant period.

Finally, the city council approved a resolution authorizing agreements between Lewisville and Community Development Block Grant sub-recipients, between the city and city social service agency fund recipients and between the economic development and planning department and public services department. Lewisville is a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) entitlement city. It submitted its 2012 annual action plan as required by HUD to receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. A contract is coming soon from HUD and funds will be appropriated for 2012-13.
