Cross Timbers Artist Tour
The Cross Timbers Artist Tour will take place Nov. 10-11.
This self-guided driving tour provides an opportunity for local artists to share their talent and provide art education to their communities located in Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Flower Mound, Highland Village and Lewisville.
Artists will showcase original art work, beautiful fused glass pieces, one-of-a-kind jewelry, oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, photogravure art etchings, handcrafted beaded crosses, award winning ceramic and clay pottery, master woodturning and art furniture.
Each artist will give demonstrations, answer questions and showcase their works of art which are all for sale. Signs will be posted to guide participants.

KLB hosts garden class
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will hold its October Garden Secrets class from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 at the Lewisville Memorial Park Recreation Center, 450 B. South Valley Parkway.
The class on "Earth Kind Gardening" will teach about types of gardening and landscaping that promote environmental responsibility and care. Come learn how to combine the best of organic gardening practices and traditional gardening principles that will make your garden both beautiful and perform well in North Texas weather conditions.
The key speaker for the class, Iris Cromarty, is an active Denton County Master Gardener.

'Finding Our Place Just Right'
The Flower Mound Public Library will host the program "Finding Our Place Just Right" at 2 p.m. Nov. 1 at the library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane.
Presenter Kathleen O'Beirne, author of the new book "Gardening: A Window on Our Soul," will present information to help you make informed choices about your "place just right."
Like any wise gardener, we need to find the place where we can bloom and thrive. With the help of a quick personality sorter, learn whether you are an Agave, a Hosta, a Black-Eyed Susan, or a Red-Hot Poker.
Your identification will determine the characteristics of the setting in which you will be happy and productive. You will be given your own identification guide and planting instructions, plus ample whimsy to fertilize your plot.
O'Beirne is a writer and consultant on education and military families who's served in leadership positions in a number of military organizations.

Landfill expansion public meeting set for Oct. 25
Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will hold a public meeting Thursday, Oct. 25, to receive comments on a request to expand the Camelot Landfill in Lewisville. The request is to expand the current footprint by 38.5 acres and to increase landfill height significantly. TCEQ has determined that the Camelot Landfill request is administratively complete and is conducting a technical review of the application.
City leaders in Lewisville and Carrollton have publicly opposed the permit request, citing a variety of environmental and procedural concerns. In addition to opposing the permit, June 14, Lewisville submitted a formal "Notice of Intent to Sue" detailing concerns about contamination escaping from the facility and setting the stage for a federal lawsuit to address those concerns.
Officials from both cities are expected to speak at the TCEQ meeting. In addition, the general public is invited to attend the meeting and voice their opinions, for or against the request.
The meeting on Oct. 25 will begin at 7 p.m. at Creekview High School, 3201 Old Denton Road in Carrollton. First will be an informal discussion period during which the public is encouraged to ask any questions of the applicant and TCEQ staff. Comments and questions during that period will not be considered part of the official record and no formal response will be made.
Afterward, a formal comment period will be held, during which members of the public can make statements to be part of the formal record and to be considered by TCEQ before a decision is made on the permit application.
Camelot Landfill also has filed a request for a 60-day extension to answer a list of 125 deficiencies identified in the application. In addition, Camelot has filed an application with TCEQ to use contaminated soil as landfill cover. Neither of those requests is expected to be part of the Oct. 25 meeting, but public comments on the contaminated soil request can be made online at the TCEQ website (permit 1312B).
While located in Lewisville, Camelot Landfill is owned and operated by the city of Farmers Branch and receives solid waste collected in that and other cities. The landfill was first permitted by the state in 1979 and opened in 1980 in a then-unincorporated area of Denton County. The 350-acre site was added to Lewisville as part of a larger annexation in 1987. It has continued operating under its existing state and city permits since that time. Camelot has not yet applied for a revised city permit to allow for the increased land area and landfill height.
KLB seeks volunteers
Keep Lewisville Beautiful will celebrate its 22nd annual Make A Difference Day wildflower planting from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 27.
The free volunteer event will be held in conjunction with the national Make A Difference Day and Keep America Beautiful's Get Growing National Planting Day and is in partnership with the local Lewisville Lowes store and the city of Lewisville. KLB has been awarded a $5000 community improvement grant from Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation (LCEF) in support of KLB's mission to empower the citizens of Lewisville through education to take greater responsibility for enhancing their community environment.
Volunteers are needed for planting wildflower seeds, flowers, raking, tilling, sowing and on site help. Sign in and registration begins at 8 a.m. at Lake Park. Plantings will take place from 8 a.m. -11:30 a.m. A pizza lunch and drinks will be provided along with KLB t-shirts. KLB will supply gloves and planting equipment, but please feel free to bring your own to use. All ages are welcome and appreciated. Last year, 150 volunteers showed community spirit by planting a half-acre of wildflowers at Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park.

Castle Hills slates fall festival
The Castle Hills Fall Festival, featuring a haunted house, live music from Lot 44, free beer tasting and more will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Village Shops in Castle Hills, 2540 King Arthur Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.
Lewisville Public Library sets activities
From 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 join the library for a drop-in crafting day. All materials are provided. Craft Day will be held in the Cynthia Bennett Children's Wing.

Flower Mound stream team seeking members
The Flower Mound Environmental Services Department is looking for volunteers (no experience necessary) to become a Texas stream team certified water quality monitor. Monitor volunteers complete three phases of training using a test kit to measure physical and chemical parameters in water, which prepares them to monitor a local stream or body of water for one year.
The next training opportunity is Oct. 23-24. Phase I of the training will be held at the Community Activities Center, 1200 Gerault Road, and Phase II and III will take place at the Timber Creek Crossing at Parker Square, 1500 Cross Timbers Road.

Addiction workshop set
Dr. Jason ZW Powers, MD, DABAM, DABFM, is a board-certified addictionologist and a board-certified family medicine physician. He will be hosting a workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the LISD Bolin Administration Center, 1565 W. Main Street in Lewisville.
Powers is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice.
Powers is the chief medical officer of TRS Behavioral, Inc., a company that includes Right Step, Spirit Lodge, and San Cristobal chemical dependency treatment centers located throughout Texas and New Mexico. He is an interventionist and also manages an outpatient addiction medicine practice. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, Powers was recognized by H Texas Magazine as one of the best addiction medicine doctors in Houston. In June 2010, he was named to the National Basketball Association's Network of Addiction Professionals.

Friends of Lewisville Public Library donates sculpture
Friends of the Lewisville Public Library donated the sculpture "Pages of Knowledge," by sculptor Kevin Robb, to the Lewisville Public Library. The custom-designed stainless steel sculpture was unveiled Sept. 14 by Friends president Jackie Knittle and secretary Marilyn Perkins. Money for the purchase was raised by the group through its semi-annual used book sale and a donation from Point Bank.
Fall festival
The Cross Timbers Family YMCA will host the 2012 Community Fall Festival from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the YMCA, 2021 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound. This is a free event.
There will be food, carnival games, activities, candy and prizes. The YMCA is also recruiting local businesses to get involved in this event.

'Changing Face of Publishing'
The Flower Mound Public Library will host the program "The Changing Face of Publishing" at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane.
More avenues to reach potential readers exist than ever before: traditional large and small presses, new e- and/or hard-copy presses, and a multitude of self-publishing options.
Award-winning author Dr. Liese Sherwood-Fabre will describe current opportunities for those entering the thrilling--and sometimes frustrating--world of book publishing.
She will touch on the advantages and disadvantages of each option as well as how to approach them once you have a book ready to go.
Local author Liese Sherwood-Fabre's debut novel, "Saving Hope," a thriller set in Russia, is now available from Musa Publishing. She is also the author of Corazones, a collection of literary short stories.

Counselor to offer help
Reni Parker, a licensed professional counselor, will be conducting an eight-week support program called SafeHaven to provide guidance to children and their families coping with the loss of a loved one.
SafeHaven is sponsored by Ann's Haven VNA and will meet Thursdays, Oct. 18 through Dec. 13 (except Nov. 22), at Trinity Presbyterian Church of Denton, 2200 North Bell Avenue. The meeting time is 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
SafeHaven is open to any child age 5 through 18 years of age who has experienced the death of a loved one. There is no cost to attend SafeHaven, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Ann's Haven VNA at 940-349-5900 or 1-800-383-5435.
DCRC to host meeting
The Denton County Republican Club will host its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1 at the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce, 551 N. Valley Parkway. State Representative Myra Crownover will speak about "What's coming up in the 83rd Legislative Session."
Grief Recovery Support Group
If you've lost someone close to you, or know someone who has, call the Grief Recovery Support Group to find out information about the group's weekly grief share seminar/support group.
A new series began Sept. 20 and meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1401 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound.

Newcomers club meetings set
The Greater Lewisville Newcomers Club was organized in 1975 to promote friendships, provide activities and social contacts and foster interest in the civic affairs of the community. Membership is open to new and existing residents of the communities in the Greater Lewisville area. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September thru May, at 9:30 a.m., at the Lewisville Church of Christ, 901 College Parkway in Lewisville.

The Lewisville Public Library Friends of the Family meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the library.
Spirithorse International program
Spirithorse International in Corinth announces its newest program, Spirithorses for Heroes, which is designed to serve wounded American warriors from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Utilizing its award-winning methods for rehabilitation, Spirithorse will provide free equine-assisted healthcare sessions to physically and mentally wounded veterans commencing Sept. 4 at its headquarters facilities in Corinth.
Spirithorse currently is the largest center for equine-assisted healthcare in the world, serving over 400 people with special needs free of charge each week.
Additionally, Spirithorse has 70 licensed centers worldwide that serve approximately 5,000 clients with special needs each week.
The launching of this program is strongly supported by the American legion, post 71, Denton, and the Denton lions club, which is holding a bowl-a-thon at Brunswick Bowling Alley in Denton behind the golden triangle mall on Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. Teams are being organized by john loving, Denton Lions, at plo1549663@aol.com or 940-566-2363.

Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the "Yard of the Month." KLB is looking for nominations. Flower Mound Walking Women
The Flower Mound Walking Women meet-up group is a free all women's walking group that walks various trails in Flower Mound. The group encourages those interested to bring their socialized dog. Volunteers needed to help nursing home residents
The North Central Texas Council of Governments' (NCTCOG) Area Agency on Aging Ombudsman Program has immediate need for warm-hearted volunteers to help residents of nursing and assisted living facilities in Denton and Collin Counties. Ombudsmen advocate for residents' rights including, but not limited to, dependable and consistent care and an environment that promotes the residents' dignity, self-determination and communication.
Volunteer Ombudsmen also receive and investigate complaints made by, or on behalf of, residents or their families. Since many residents do not receive regular visitors or have close relatives, it may be difficult for them to enlist advocates. Volunteer Ombudsmen serve as advocates for all residents, connecting them to their broader communities, affirming their rights, and assisting them in resolving concerns.
No prior experience is required to serve as a volunteer ombudsman, but volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and complete a free training course that consists of both classroom study and training at local nursing homes, lasting up to 34 contact hours. After training, volunteers serve an internship, working two to three hours per week in their assigned facility. Hours are flexible and are determined by each volunteer. Training begins in late August and will be held locally.
