On Top of Things: Plano sweeps McKinney to remain tied for first in 10-5A

MCKINNEY -- The Plano Senior volleyball team swept McKinney on Tuesday night (25-22, 25-15, 25-14) to open the second round of district on a winning note.
With the win, the Lady Wildcats moved to 5-1 in 10-5A and remained tied for first place with McKinney Boyd, which represents their lone district loss.
McKinney remained winless in district (0-6) with the defeat.
As has been the case much of district, McKinney put together a competitive but losing effort in the first set.
The Lionettes kept pace with Plano thanks to kills provided by Logann King, Anna Robertson and Erin Hoppe. They even put together a late push, pulling as close as 24-22 after a series of Lady Wildcats' hitting errors. But the Lady Wildcats closed out before the set slipped away on a kill from junior outside hitter Kylie Long, who led the team with 10 kills and had five blocks, the bulk of which came in the second set.
The Lady Wildcats recovered from their contentious start to open that set on a six-point run, and the quick intro built a lead they would maintain the rest of the way.
Plano closed the set on a 10-5 run as the miscues it showed earlier were replaced with an aggressive attack headed by Long and junior right side hitter Natalie Fazio. Long landed the winning point on an ace to push the Lady Wildcats a set away from the sweep.
The final set followed a similar script, with Plano again jumping to an early lead courtesy of a 10-3 start established on a kill from senior outside hitter Sam Seal, who had seven kills in the match. The Lady Wildcats' lead didn't waver far from that point as their defense kept McKinney from staging another comeback, with senior setter Audrey Landry, who had a team-best 12 digs, leading the way.
Plano closed out the win on a kill from senior middle blocker Ally Birkett.
Tuesday's sweep completed the season series between McKinney and the Lady Wildcats, who also swept their first meeting (25-16, 25-17, 25-18).
The Lady Wildcats will be back in action Friday when they travel to Boyd for a 6 p.m. match. The Lady Broncos maintained their first-place status and moved to 5-1 in district with a 3-1 win against Plano West on Tuesday. McKinney will be after its first district win when it travels to Plano East at the same time. The Lionettes almost upset the Lady Panthers in their first meeting, but fell in five sets (25-18, 25-22, 13-25, 17-25, 15-8).
Lady Cats steady at No. 13
A tie atop the District 10-5A standings has been enough to keep Plano high in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 5A poll.
The Lady Wildcats remain at No. 13.
Plano is also No. 14 in the LoneStarVolleyball.com Texas Top 20 poll, which ranks all teams in the state together regardless of classification.
