Fort Wildflower to open Oct. 20
After months of preparation and work, Flower Mound’s first community-built playground will officially open Oct. 20.
Fort Wildflower, a 12,500 square-foot playground, will be one of the components of Heritage Park of Flower Mound, located at the northwest intersection of Garden Ridge Boulevard and Spinks Road. There will also be a grand opening for Phase I of the park on the same day.
Some of the work that still needs to be finished in the playground is the painting, artwork and pickets around the playground. There is also a safety check that needs to be complete.
Children participated in a “soft opening” Sept. 15, marking the end of major construction of the project.
Hundreds of volunteers spent their time constructing the playground. On the final build day, nearly 400 volunteers were on site, and their roles included building the equipment, watching children and providing food and supplies.
Fort Wildflower is divided into two sections. One section is for younger children and includes smaller slides, play houses and other components. Another section is for children a little bit older. That includes higher swings and larger slides. The playground also features monkey bars, a fireman’s pole, a cave area and a draw bridge.
“This is truly a legacy that the community can say they left for future generations to enjoy,” said Angie Cox, playground committee member. “It was amazing to see the love and the joy that was put into this.”
The nature-themed playground is made from recycled wood fiber products instead of wood.
Another important feature is its accessibility for all children, which means more ramps than most parks.
Fort Wildflower is one of the components featured in Phase I of Heritage Park. Other Phase I features are trail connections, picnic pavilion, pedestrian bridge, restrooms, amphitheater (the stage and grass seating only), driveway and three turn lanes.
Phase II features botanical gardens, disc golf park, duck pond, additional pedestrian trails and more.
