AISD School Board outreach
Allen ISD is holding a community Q & A meeting (question and answer) on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Curtis Middle School cafeteria.
The program, which is the first in a series of community outreach programs for the Board of Trustees, is planned as an open agenda event where community members can ask questions of trustees and offer comments on school district programs and initiatives.
The purpose of the Q & A meetings is to allow more conversation between the Board and citizens on issues that impact the school district.
Board President Gary Stocker will host the event along with Dr. Ken Helvey, Superintendent of Schools. The program is open to all Allen residents and will run from 6:30 - 8 p.m.
Cattle drive set for Stampede
Mark your calendars now for The Tom Thumb Texas Stampede Rancher's Reserve Cattle Drive on Wednesday, Oct. 24! The parade starts around 11 a.m. in Allen Station Park, will travel north on Andrews Parkway into The Village at Allen and end up at Allen Event Center. The cattle drive is the first event leading up to The Tom Thumb Texas Stampede which comes back to Allen Event Center Nov. 9-10 for bull riding, rodeo, concerts and shopping.
Be on the alert during holiday season
As part of Project C.L.E.A.N., the Allen Police Department (APD) recently released a single-day snapshot of burglaries in Allen. Five of the six burglaries listed were of a motor vehicle and the other was at a residence. APD sent this information as a reminder to residents - please keep your garage doors closed, lock all doors and windows and don't leave valuables in your car! This is even more important to remember as the holiday season begins. Remember to report ALL suspicious activity to the Allen Police Dispatch at 214.509.4321. You can even submit an anonymous tip by texting a message to 847411 with ALLENPD along with your tip, or submit an online form.
Chamber golf tournament
The 26th annual Allen Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic will tee off Friday at Twin Creeks Golf Club. Registration and breakfast begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start set for 9:30 a.m.

ALLen Reads hosts Henry Cole

Kick off this year's ALLen Reads by meeting author and illustrator Henry Cole at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Allen Public Library. Cole's A Nest for Celeste is one of this year's ALLen Reads selections.
In his critically-acclaimed A Nest for Celeste, Cole combines fantasy and natural history by using animal characters and a pristine physical environment to offer an enchanting story. Released in 2010, A Nest for Celeste illuminates the life and works of John James Audubon through the story of Celeste, a mouse who, while looking for a place to call home, makes friends with Audubon's young apprentice.
Cole is an illustrator of more than 90 books, including The Leprechaun's Gold by Pamela Duncan Edwards, which was a New York Times bestseller. Cole collaborated with Julie Andrews to illustrate Little Bo, which became a national bestseller.
Cole's books explore the themes of tolerance, acceptance, addressing fears, empowerment and connecting. He traces his philosophy to an aunt who visited his home when he was five. When she noticed a spider crawling on the kitchen floor, she placed it in an envelope and took it outside to give it a new home in the bushes. "She could have killed it but elected to connect to it and permit it to have a chance at life," Cole recalls. Learning this valuable lesson by example rather than verbal instruction later influenced his highly acclaimed creations.

Lawless and Bottleggin'
During Prohibition, when someone came knocking at the back door in the dark of night, no one yelled out, "Who's there?" The caller's purpose for the visit was already known.
When liquor was delivered in exchange for money, silence was the unwritten code. Even though bootlegging and moonshine production were sometimes turbulent forces in the underground economy, they were also major sources of revenue for the grain farmer and the distiller.
The recently released and critically acclaimed movie Lawless, directed by John Hillcoat and starring Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeoulf and Jessica Chastian, tells the story of a massive liquor bootlegging business during the Prohibition Era. The film is based on the book The Wettest County In The World by Matt Bondurant. This author will speak at the Allen Public Library at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
In his book, Bondurant describes his grandfather and great uncles' bootlegging business in Franklin County, Virginia. Typical of moonshining operations throughout the South, the law wanted their cut of the revenue, and turf wars became bloody - even within families. Working with only small fragments of information from family members, Bondurant researched newspaper archives and court records but found he had insufficient data to write a work of nonfiction. As a novelist, he filled in the gaps.
Raised in Alexandria, Va., Bondurant is a literature and creative writing professor at the University of Texas at Dallas. Bondurant's other two novels are The Night Swimmer and The Third Translation.

Introducing LPS Foundation
The mission of Lifepath Systems Foundation is to provide support for the programs and services of LifePath Systems (also known as Collin County Mental Health/Mental Retardation). LPS serves the community in the areas of early childhood intervention, mental health, mental retardation and substance abuse needs.
The LPS Foundation will be hosting a seminar on Mental Health First Aid on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Allen.
