Celebrate Family Literacy Week
It is always a good time to sow the seeds for the love of reading. In celebration of The National Coalition for Literacy (AEFL) Week, Golden Corridor Republican Women member, Elizabeth Muzyka, makes time to read to Ross and Lozano family home-schoolers in her Plano neighborhood.
For the fourth consecutive year, National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week was declared by act of the US Congress. The House declaration (H.R. 756) was sponsored by Rep Jared Polis [D-CO] with fifteen co-signers. A companion bill, S. Res. 546, was co-sponsored by Senators Patty Murray [D-WA] and Lamar Alexander [R-TN] with eight cosigners.
Family literacy programs serve parents and their young children, teaching basic skills, English as a Second Language, and parenting skills to adults while their children are provided high quality instruction. These programs are focused on breaking the cycles of low literacy, low education and poverty.
During National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, the National Coalition for Literacy recognized individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to adult education this year at its Annual Literacy Leadership Award celebration in Washington DC.
