Authors to host book signing


Chuck Heath and Chuck Heath, Jr. will be signing copies of their book "Our Sarah" at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at Barnes & Noble at The Shops of Highland Village. Heath, Sr. is Sarah Palin's father, he and her brother, Heath, Jr. co-wrote the book.

Cancer killers workshop set

Dr. Ashley Green of Lewisville Family Chiropractics will host a workshop about cancer at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8 at the Lewisville Public Library in the Crawford Meeting Room. The seminar will help residents gain a better understanding of cancer, the different causes and the different studies that have been done all over the world. It will also go over ways to avoid cancer all together and the different things people can do if they have already had it. Registration is required at 972-219-3779.

Women of Flower Mound

The Women of Flower Mound will have its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 9 at Bridlewood Golf Club. Guests are welcome, and you don't have to live in Flower Mound to join or attend.

Meetings include a fun program, door prizes and a delicious dinner. For the October meeting, the speaker will be Chef John Gannon of Rouge Moderne Bistro. He is going to teach some new holiday recipes for entertaining and share with us some short cuts in the kitchen.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for registration and get acquainted time, dinner is served at 7 p.m. The event usually concludes between 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

RSVP at www.womenofflowermound.org for the meeting by the Thursday prior to each meeting date to get the discounted timely RSVP dinner rate of $15 for members. RSVPs received after Thursday, and pricing at the door and for guests will be at the full price of $20. Dinner fees can be paid with cash or check at the door, or by credit card online in advance of the meeting.

Friends of Lewisville Public Library donates sculpture

Friends of the Lewisville Public Library donated the sculpture "Pages of Knowledge," by sculptor Kevin Robb, to the Lewisville Public Library. The custom-designed stainless steel sculpture was unveiled Sept. 14 by Friends president Jackie Knittle and secretary Marilyn Perkins. Money for the purchase was raised by the group through its semi-annual used book sale and a donation from Point Bank.

Fall festival

The Cross Timbers Family YMCA will host the 2012 Community Fall Festival from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 26 at the YMCA, 2021 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound. This is a free event.

There will be food, carnival games, activities, candy and prizes. The YMCA is also recruiting local businesses to get involved in this event.

'Changing Face of Publishing'

The Flower Mound Public Library will host the program "The Changing Face of Publishing" at 7 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Library, 3030 Broadmoor Lane.

More avenues to reach potential readers exist than ever before: traditional large and small presses, new e- and/or hard-copy presses, and a multitude of self-publishing options.

Award-winning author Dr. Liese Sherwood-Fabre will describe current opportunities for those entering the thrilling--and sometimes frustrating--world of book publishing.

She will touch on the advantages and disadvantages of each option as well as how to approach them once you have a book ready to go.

Local author Liese Sherwood-Fabre's debut novel, "Saving Hope," a thriller set in Russia, is now available from Musa Publishing. She is also the author of Corazones, a collection of literary short stories.

Counselor to offer help

Reni Parker, a licensed professional counselor, will be conducting an eight-week support program called SafeHaven to provide guidance to children and their families coping with the loss of a loved one.

SafeHaven is sponsored by Ann's Haven VNA and will meet Thursdays, Oct. 18 through Dec. 13 (except Nov. 22), at Trinity Presbyterian Church of Denton, 2200 North Bell Avenue. The meeting time is 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

SafeHaven is open to any child age 5 through 18 years of age who has experienced the death of a loved one. There is no cost to attend SafeHaven, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Ann's Haven VNA at 940-349-5900 or 1-800-383-5435.

Author to be featured speaker

Larry Barber, a licensed professional counselor and author of "Love Never Dies," will be the featured speaker at the Oct. 9 hospice family luncheon hosted by Ann's Haven VNA. Mr. Barber will speak on "Grief and the Coming Holidays."

The luncheon is from noon to 1 p.m. at the Denton Elks Lodge, 228 East Oak St. There is no cost to attend the luncheon, but reservations are requested and can be made by calling Molly Harrison, Ann's Haven VNA bereavement coordinator at 940-349-5900.

Ann's Haven VNA hospice family luncheons offer supportive company from friendly and understanding people to individuals who have suffered the loss of a loved one.

Addiction workshop set

Dr. Jason ZW Powers, MD, DABAM, DABFM, is a board-certified addictionologist and a board-certified family medicine physician. He will be hosting a workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at the LISD Bolin Administration Center, 1565 W. Main Street in Lewisville.

Powers is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and a Diplomat of the American Board of Family Practice.

Powers is the chief medical officer of TRS Behavioral, Inc., a company that includes Right Step, Spirit Lodge, and San Cristobal chemical dependency treatment centers located throughout Texas and New Mexico. He is an interventionist and also manages an outpatient addiction medicine practice. In 2007, 2008, and 2009, Powers was recognized by H Texas Magazine as one of the best addiction medicine doctors in Houston. In June 2010, he was named to the National Basketball Association's Network of Addiction Professionals.

Grief Recovery Support Group

|If you've lost someone close to you, or know someone who has, call the Grief Recovery Support Group to find out information about the group's weekly grief share seminar/support group.

A new series began Sept. 20 and meets every Thursday at 7 p.m. at Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1401 Cross Timbers Road in Flower Mound.

Newcomers club meetings set

The Greater Lewisville Newcomers Club was organized in 1975 to promote friendships, provide activities and social contacts and foster interest in the civic affairs of the community. Membership is open to new and existing residents of the communities in the Greater Lewisville area. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month from September thru May, at 9:30 a.m., at the Lewisville Church of Christ, 901 College Parkway in Lewisville.

Library group sets meetings

The Lewisville Public Library Friends of the Family meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month at the library.

KLB seeks nominations

Keep Lewisville Beautiful (KLB) recognizes one residential and one business each month from April through October for the "Yard of the Month." KLB is looking for nominations. All nominations must be in by the 20th of each month. Photos of each property will be displayed on KLB's website by the 25th of each month for voting.

Flower Mound Walking Women

The Flower Mound Walking Women meet-up group is a free all women's walking group that walks various trails in Flower Mound. The group encourages those interested to bring their socialized dog.
