Sustainability Workshops Come To North Lake

Published: Monday, October 1, 2012 8:42 AM CDT
New professional development courses benefit the community at large

IRVING, Texas- North Lake College (NLC) will offer a Sustainability Workshop Series for individuals, companies, and organizations that want to become more ‘sustainable’ in how they operate. The professional development courses will run October 12-13 and November 2-10, 2012 at NLC’s central campus.

The only DCCCD college to offer professional development courses in sustainability, North Lake is known for being green savvy. In fact, NLC signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in 2007, pledging to eliminate its contribution to global warming over time.

Titled “The Sustainability Challenge: Essentials for Understanding,” the first Sustainability Workshop series explores what sustainability is and how to achieve it - both in business planning and decision-making. The workshop utilizes The Natural Step Framework, a model used by organizations worldwide to drive innovation, achieve economic savings, build internal ‘sustainability capacity’ and decrease environmental impact.

The second workshop series, “Sustainability: Gateway to Growth,” investigates the many questions surrounding sustainability, including how to shift sustainability from “something we want” to “something we can plan for.” The successful completion of both workshops provides strategic insights, expert mechanisms and the effective use of the organizational sciences to assist businesses in reaching desired goals and outcomes.

Last year more than 20 exhibitors shared their exciting green products and services at the annual DCCCD Sustainability Summit. NLC hopes their Sustainability Workshops Series will increase that number by benefitting the community at large, including architects, communications/marketing departments, business managers, facility managers, municipal leaders, elected officials, and students of sustainability issues.
