Published: Thursday, September 20, 2012 10:15 AM CDT
The Mesquite Arts Center always has a full list of event taking place for art enthusiasts of all ages.

The center closes out the month of September with the conclusion of its weaving exhibit, Art from the Loom. The exhibit runs through Friday, Oct. 5, and features artwork of 20 weavers using textile techniques as well as some innovative contemporary materials such as bamboo.

"The exhibit has been very well received. We have had people through the exhibit every day. We had a packed house of about 70 weavers and their friends during the artists' reception," said Mike Templeton, art center director.

The show is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the arts center's gallery. Admission is free to see the exhibit.

The month of October kicks off with the sounds of the Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7. The chorus will present a program entitled, DUSON A Walk with Me. Tickets for the concert are $9 and available at www.thechildrenschorus.org.

"This is something that we collaborated with Jean Rogers Winchell on. She gave the art center an endowment that as it grows will eventually fund all of our concerts," Templeton said. He said that those that attend will be thoroughly entertained at the skill level of the chorus.

"This concert will be considered A cappella style music. It's classic music that features the work of Dede Duson. This group is a premiere organization in this country. They have approximately 500 children that are currently involved. The performing ensemble is made up of about four choruses," Templeton said.

The art center will also feature the some Halloween themed music as the Mesquite Symphony Orchestra hosts it CHILLERS; Night on Bare Mountain concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. The cost to attend the concert is $12 for adults and $6 for students.

"The concert will feature music to highlight the Halloween season," Templeton said.

The arts center will also be offering up laughs in October as the Mesquite Community Theatre presents the play Greater Tuna.

"This is made up of a cast of local actors. It is the same thing creators Jaston Williams and Joe Sears have traveled the country performing. It is set in a small town with small town morale and features two actors that make up the entire population of the town," Templeton said.

The play will be presented at 8 p.m. on Oct. 19, 20, 26, 27 and Nov. 1 and at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 and Oct. 28. The cost to attend is $15 for adults, $12 for students and $8 for children ages 6 and under. Adult admission for Thursday or Sunday matinee performances is reduced to $12. You can receive $1 off your ticket price by bringing one nonperishable food item to the door to be donated to Mesquite Social Services.
