Fugitive convicted of sixth DWI surrenders to authorities
From Staff Reports
Richard Davis Callaway, a 48-year-old Plano resident, surrendered to the Collin County Sheriff's Office Monday after nearly a month as a fugitive, announced Greg Willis, Collin County District Attorney.
On March 7, Callaway was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his sixth driving while intoxicated conviction.
Callaway appeared in court for the start of the trial and heard all of the evidence against him. After the court took a recess for lunch, Callaway never returned to the courtroom, but the trial was completed without him by Judge Ray Wheless. After the 40-year sentence was pronounced, a warrant was issued for Callaway's arrest.
Testimony presented during sentencing showed that Callaway had been to prison at least twice before on burglary charges and prior DWI charges. In 1992, Callaway was convicted of his third DWI in Denton County and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
