Letter to the Editor: Why we said ‘no’ to Kroger
Election season is upon us with the “Vote for Me” signs in full bloom. The rhetoric of folks who engage in half truths, misrepresentations, inaccuracies and general prevarication is greening up.
Our current crop of challengers seems to fall in this category and have raised the Kroger case as an example of economic development Armageddon.
Facts: Kroger’s gas pumps were denied by P&Z because the proposed location was unsafe. The choice was to put our citizens at increased risk or fix the problem. What were the risks? There was the 10,000 gallon fuel delivery tanker that would hang into FM1171, the Alexandria Kroger fuel pump fire that destroyed a pickup, and then there were the five Pearland, TX drive bys/muggings/car thefts. The Atlanta Kroger price gouging convictions by the state attorney general were also not publicly cited.
Several cost sensitive remedies were proposed to Kroger. They were not accepted. P&Z then provided an opportunity for town council to accept the risks and approve the project or proffer more potential solutions. Kroger again, at the public hearing, refused to consider those recommendations. Council then chose to protect the citizens of Flower Mound by approving the store rehab but not the location of the pumps. Not everyone agreed, with some suggesting that safety risks were minimal while economic gain substantial. To those folks I suggest a visit to a burn ward.
Kroger is welcome in our community but they need to react to how seriously we take the safety of all who live and work in our beautiful town.
Dennis McKaige,
Vice chairman of the planning & zoning commission

Town Council was wise to remand the Kroger agenda item to Planning and Zoning, so that the commissioners could have an opportunity to revisit the any possible solutions, but unfortunately this was not to occur. On December 6, 2011, the Flower Mound Leader reported that Gary Huddleston said that Kroger was not convinced that they would be successful at planning and zoning, so they decided to withdraw the item from the agenda. http://www.flowermoundleader.com/articles/2011/12/06/flower_mound_leader/news/024.txt
Lastly, thank you fellow Commissioner McKaige for addressing the political nature of what has transpired with the Kroger application denial from late 2011 and been blown out of proportion by those who are running for office. Candidates who are running against the incumbents are stating in their campaign literature that the incumbents were against the $14,3 renovation/expansion of the Kroger store, which is not true. I do not know of any sitting council member who was against the improvements and expansion of the store. It is on record that Bryan Webb announced his candidacy for Town Council during public participation at the Public Hearing for the Kroger SUP request before Town Council meeting on November 21, 2011, If that is not political posturing, I dont know what is.
