McKinney High no longer Unacceptable, boosts district rating
By Andrew Snyder, asnyder@acnpapers.com
With the release of the 2010 Campus Accountability Ratings from the Texas Education Agency last week, teachers and administrators from school districts across the state were given their final grades.
McKinney ISD received a Recognized rating overall and had 10 elementary schools named Exemplary, the highest rating: Wilmeth, McGowen, Bennett, McNeil, Wolford, Walker, Eddins, Johnson, Glen Oaks and Valley Creek.
According to a release from the district, the 2010 ratings show improvement in every TAKS content area.
Collin County had a number of high achieving districts. Frisco and Allen ISD were given only Recognized and Exemplary ratings, with the bulk of their schools landing in the higher category.
Accountability ratings are determined by the TAKS scores, completion rate and annual dropout rate of the overall student population and among individual groups of a certain size, such as economically disadvantaged students, who make up approximately a quarter of MISD’s population.
The release of last year’s ratings sent a shock through the district when McKinney High was tagged as Academically Unacceptable due to a coding error that set its completion rate for Hispanic and disadvantaged students too low.
McKinney High rebounded and received a Recognized rating this year.
“McKinney High School was tripped up last year by its completion rate which, admittedly, caught us by surprise,” Dr. Kennedy said. “This past year an aggressive and comprehensive dropout prevention plan was implemented, staff was dedicated to this charge, and efforts were expanded to extend the learning. In addition, we corrected the process to avoid similar coding errors from reoccurring. The campus exceeded expectations with target completion rate indicators improving some 25 percentage points. The district also saw significant gains in its completion rate. The Unacceptable rating was never indicative of the overall quality of the education at McKinney High School. This year, the school will be a Recognized campus.”
The district’s other two high schools, McKinney Boyd and McKinney North, also received Recognized ratings: Boyd by maintaining its previous rating and North by moving up from its Academically Acceptable status in 2009.
Overall, MISD dropped its number of Acceptable schools from five to one, Malvern Elementary. The remaining elementary and middle schools received Recognized ratings, with Burks and Finch Elementary and Faubion Middle School moving up from Acceptable. Minshew and Slaughter Elementary dropped from Exemplary status last year to complete the district’s 16-school Recognized count.
State-wide 48 percent of schools, charters included, were given Recognized status.

Good luck. Then name any school district in Collin County that was less than recognzied. Again, good luck.
bottom line, we're at the bottom of Collin County schools. How does that feel, with our state maximum $1.54 property tax rate? "
