A single shot from a handgun rang out inside Town East Mall Friday afternoon at approximately 4:43 p.m. The owner of Classique Jewelers, Louis Fuentes, fired the shot from his handgun at a fleeing suspect. The subject entered the business and selected a 2.5 ct. diamond ring valued at $10,000. The store owner was showing the ring when the subject grabbed it from his hand and fled the store.
The bullet fired from the gun ricocheted off some shelving inside the JCPenney department store and came to rest fully intact on the carpet near a rack of men’s sweaters. No one was injured and there was only minor damage to property.
Mesquite Police are searching for a suspect described as a black male between 30 to 35 years of age. The suspect is between 6 feet and 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs around 240 pounds. He has a military style hair cut and a full beard. He was wearing a light blue T-shirt, gray sweat pants and black and white athletic style shoes. The suspect was caught on videotape as he raced through JCPenney into the mall parking lot. The suspect fled the mall in an unknown vehicle.
The police have arrested Fuentes and charged him with deadly conduct.
Police spokesman Lt. Yates said that in his fifteen years on the Mesquite Police Department he could not remember an incident like this happening at the mall.
