Father shoots family, self

Published: Thursday, September 21, 2006 6:16 PM CDT
A father of two boys went room to room shooting members of his family, then himself either last Thursday night or Friday morning.

Carrollton police were called to the upscale home of the Kataria family in the 3600 block of Cimarron shortly after 9 a.m. Friday where they found the bodies of Samir Kataria, 41, his wife Sham, 39, 18-year-old son Salim and 9-year-old son Salik.

Carrollton police and the Tarrant County Medical Office conducted extensive investigations before determining exactly how the family members died.

Sgt. Patrick Murphy, spokesperson for the Carrollton Police Department, said Tuesday, “The preliminary investigation by Carrollton police investigators indicates that the family found deceased inside their residence on Cimarron Drive were victims of a triple murder/suicide.”

He added, “The evidence indicates that Samir Kataria went from room to room shooting his family before shooting himself. All the victims were found in their beds. Samir Kataria was also found in his bed.”

Two Sig 9mm handguns were found at the scene. Samir Kataria left a suicide note that did not definitely state a motive. Police did not make public the contents of the note.

A joint funeral service for the family was held Sunday afternoon at the Hughes Funeral Home North Chapel on Webb Chapel Road.

Friends and neighbors of the Kataria family expressed shock and surprise at the shooting deaths. However, a sister of Mrs. Kataria, who had a house key, reportedly came to the residence after being concerned for the family.

Friends of Salim Kataria, who had recently graduated from Hebron High School, described him as being friendly, with plans to attend Ohio State University this fall.

The Kataria’s owned a discount store, called Sam’s 1 Dollar, in Arlington. They lived in a $300,000 two-story home in North Carrollton, just north of the Indian Creek Golf Course.
